Two Brookhaven police officers killed in Saturday morning shooting

From The Daily Leader

BROOKHAVEN — Two Brookhaven police officers were killed in an exchange of gunfire with a suspect on North Sixth Street early Saturday morning.

Cpl. Zach Moak, 31, and patrolman James White, 35, are the names of the two BPD officers killed in the line.

More than 30 police vehicles are still crammed into the dense residential area at the triple intersection of Sixth, Hinds and Choctaw streets, and the shooting remains under investigation as of 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Brookhaven police, Lincoln County deputies and highway patrolmen are searching the area and interviewing possible witnesses.

According to authorities, one suspect was also killed.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation will take charge of the developing case and has a crime unit on scene.

Two unidentified males were handcuffed and led away, though police are not giving out any details at this time.

Warren Strain, public information officer for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, gave the media a briefing at the Brookhaven Police Department.

Gov. Phil Bryant tweeted his condolences.

“Let us all pray just now for the family and loved ones of these fallen heroes,” the governor said. “May the Good Lord hold them in his everlasting arms.”

Attorney General Jim Hood also took to Twitter, saying, “We extend our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of these Brookhaven Police officers killed today in the line of duty. God bless you, all. We’ll never forget their sacrifice.”

Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann also tweeted about the thin blue line.

“These officers sacrificed everything to keep their community safe. We are praying for their families this morning,” he said.
