Huntington victory wears out coach

TALLULAH, La. — Huntington coach Chad Harkins is worn out from his team’s win Friday.
It seems the defenses for both Huntington and Tallulah Academy stayed home in the Hounds’ 58-49 win.
“I hadn’t been in a track meet quite that big,” Harkins said. “It lasted too long. Two hours and 45 minutes.”
The high-scoring, yard-gobbling MPSA District 6-A game saw Jeremy Randall rush for six touchdowns on 15 carries for 185 yards.
Josh Lee scored once on 17 carries, racking up 172 yards.
“Every time (Randall) got the ball, he got 10 yards,” Harkins said. “Josh Lee was big deal in the second half. He kept the clock moving, having those 4- and 5-yard runs. Jeremy scored a little too quick.”
The Hounds plan going into the game was to pressure the Trojans to score, hoping to run them into mistakes.
Huntington went for a two-point conversion instead of kicking after every score, giving them nine points every time Tallulah scored seven.
“I didn’t think it was going to turn out like that,” Harkins said.
The Hounds had 549 total yards of offense, 408 on the ground. All their touchdowns came from rushes.
Huntington will travel to Glenbrook Academy on Friday for what Harkins said was basically a district championship match up.
Sam Byrd is also a tired coach after Wilkinson County Christian’s game against Riverdale.
The 44-36 loss lasted three hours and 15 minutes as the leads were traded back and forth in the District 6-A game.
WCCA had the advantage, 28-6, in the first half before Riverdale came back within six at the half.
Riverdale overtook the Rams by holding them scoreless in the third, and after WCCA scored once more in the fourth, the Rebels clinched the victory.
“When they took the lead, 30-28, my kids came right back and scored,” Byrd said. “I don’t think it was a panic mode. It was just one of those whoever had the ball last was going to win the game type of things.”
Todd Gonda was 5-for-15 with 122 yards and two touchdown passes, including an 82-yarder to Tip McKenzie.
“It was a play we’ve been working on, and it worked well,” Byrd said. “It creates confusion in the secondary and gets him into a spot where he can get down the sideline.”
McKenzie scored three times, including a 31-yard interception return in the second quarter.
The Rams have their homecoming Friday against Cenla Academy.
Adams County Christian played two different games in one Friday, losing to Claiborne Academy, 31-14.
District 3-2A ACCS was down, 24-0, at halftime to 6-A Claiborne.
“We came out in the first half and we basically did not execute defensively or offensively,” said ACCS coach Paul Hayles. “Subtracting the opening drive of the game, we really made bad plays, which gave them those scoring opportunities. We had two punts that were blocked and gave them ball inside 20 on both.”
ACCS came out a different team in the second half, with Bryce Murray taking the opening kickoff more than 80 yards back for a touchdown.
They cut the lead to 10 before a penalty negated an onside kick.
“If we could have come out and played the first half like we played the second half, then our chances to win would have been very good,” Hayles said. “The momentum was high — we stopped them on the next drive (after the return), three and out.”
Hayles said he did not even have to tell his team what went wrong in the game. They knew.
“It was a tale of two halves,” he said. “The first half it was like we weren’t even there, and then the second half it looked like we were in complete control at points.”
Now, the Rebels will travel to Bastrop, La., to take on Prairie View Academy in district play.
The Spartans are on a two-game winning streak after losing their first six.
“They have an excellent senior tailback, No. 9,” Hayles said. “They picked up four kids right before the deadline date on new transfers … the week they played Trinity, so they weren’t eligible to play that game.”
In other games this week, Trinity, who defeated Silliman Institute 35-12, will host River Oaks in 3-2A play.
Centreville Academy plays host to Oak Forest in 5-A action after defeating Amite School Center, 35-7.
In eight-man football, Tensas Academy defeated Mt. Salus, 40-16. The Chiefs will take on Kemper on Friday.
