MINDEN, La. — Two of the top three teams in MPSA Class A went up against each other Friday night as the second-ranked Glenbrook Apaches played host to the No. 3 Huntington Hounds.

A lot was at stake in this game. Not only was Huntington trying to avenge last year’s loss to Glenbrook in the Class A South State Championship game, but the winner of this game would pretty much win the District 6-A championship.

Unfortunately for the Hounds, they could not stop Glenbrook when it mattered most — the second half — as the Apaches took a 33-12 win with one district game remaining for both teams.

After Glenbrook’s Hunter Leppert threw a 20-yard touchdown pass with 9:05 remaining in the third quarter, Jeremy Randall scored on a 10-yard run with 3:50 to go in the quarter to make it a 13-12 ball game.

It was all Glenbrook after that, as the Apaches scored 20 unanswered points. Jack Jiles had two touchdown runs, one with 20 seconds to go in the third quarter and the other early in the fourth quarter. Preston Wise added a 25-yard touchdown run with 4:09 left in the game.

Huntington (6-3, 6-1) had 188 yards rushing and did not turn the ball over, but Glenbrook (7-2, 7-0) had too many weapons on offense for the Hounds’ defense to contain.

CENLA Christian 28, WCCA 19

WOODVILLE — Wilkinson County Christian Academy, who had already been eliminated from playoff contention, were hoping to play the role of spoiler and knock CENLA Christian Academy out of playoff contention themselves.

However, CENLA’s ground attack was too much for the Rams, as they built a huge lead and then held on for the big victory.

WCCA waited until the end of the third quarter to score on CENLA Christian on Friday, and by then it was too late as the Rams fell, 28-19, in District 6-A play.

CENLA scored 28 points before WCCA ever got on the board, including a safety in the second quarter.

CENLA had run the ball all the way down field before being forced to punt to WCCA, but the Rams’ snap went through the end zone to give up two points.

WCCA scored the last three touchdowns of the game, and all were run in by Tip McKenzie, who recorded 115 yards on 21 carries. McKenzie also went 2-for-4 passing for seven yards.

Todd Gonda threw 7-for-16 for 87 yards and an interception, and the Rams had 94 yards in the air to CENLA’s -1. Gonda also had an interception on defense.

But CENLA defeated the Rams on the ground, rushing for 301 yards.

Tucker Curry, Hayden Holden and Garret Wilkerson each recovered a CENLA fumble.

CENLA keeps its playoff hopes alive with the win while WCCA is playing for nothing but pride the remainder of the season.

The Rams take on the Centreville Tigers next week in their final home game of the season.

The 2008 WCCA senior football players will be honored before the game, which will kick off at 7 p.m. at Son Chisolm Field.
