WOODVILLE — Centreville Academy didn’t have any pity for rival Wilkinson County Christian School’s losing streak.

With pride and a successful season on the line, Centreville took care of business, 40-0.

The win was the sixth-straight over WCCA.

“The defense played good,” Centreville assistant coach Brian Stutzman said. “We came flat and gave up a couple of big plays, and had a couple of turnovers that changed the momentum.”

But once Centreville’s defense tightened up in the first quarter, the Tigers took control of the game. Even though all six of their touchdowns were on the ground, they threw the ball more than they usually do — and that was by design.

“Kyle Brown threw the ball well and our receivers caught the ball well,” Stutzman said. “We were able to run the ball. The line blocked well. We were trying to work on our passing game tonight.”

Brown completed 11-of-16 passes for 183 yards with one interception. Hunter Brabham had three catches for 42 yards while Colby Lockwood had three catches for 30 yards and Beau Field had two receptions for 51 yards.

Offensively, WCCA (3-7) couldn’t get much going against a stingy Tigers defense. The Rams were held to seven first downs and 140 yards of total offense. Todd Gonda, who had been playing quarterback for much of the season due to injuries, played sparingly in this game, throwing and completing one pass for 20 yards.

Centreville (8-2) had 238 yards on the ground and was led by Cliff Hurst, who had 86 yards rushing and one touchdown on nine carries. His 22-yard scoring run as well as Brandon Aldridge’s 3-yard touchdown run right before halftime capped off a 20-point second quarter that gave the Tigers a 27-0 halftime lead.

Field had a pair of short touchdown runs in the game and Brabham had the game’s first touchdown just past the midway point of the first quarter. Hunter Travis finished off the scoring with a 15-yard run with 44 seconds remaining in the game.

Christopher Houghton took over for Gonda and completed 1-of-4 passes for 17 yards and one interception. Tip McKenzie led WCCA’s offense with 61 yards rushing on 21 carries and Houghton added 26 yards rushing on five carries.

Centreville’s defense was led by Brabham with seven tackles, Brodie Lafontaine with six tackles and Adam Perry with one interception. WCCA’s defense was led by Houghton with 11 tackles and Tucker Curry with six tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery.

Stutzman said next Friday night’s game at home against Trinity Episcopal is will have a playoff-like atmosphere. “It’s going to be exciting,” he said.
