Adams County is a bit greener today.

The sun is shining nicely. The nippy temperatures make us all feel alive. And decorative pumpkins are adding some color to our world.

But it’s not the weather that’s making the difference; it’s the trash.

Trash started building up at Natchez Metals and Recycling Monday morning, but owner Bubba Kaiser didn’t mind digging out.

In fact, he’s asking for more trash.

Kaiser and his shop are the first tangible result of the Adams County recycling committee.

And though Kaiser is an independent business owner trying to make money, he’s also filling a need within our county.

For years, recycling has been nonexistent in Adams County.

Now, residents can take paper, plastic, aluminum cans, steel food cans and cardboard to the Highland Boulevard location to be recycled.

Granted, it’s not curbside recycling, which is still the ultimate goal, but it is a start.

The recycling committee is now focusing on recycling education but hopes to do more in the future.

The key to the success of any recycling program isn’t up to its organizers though. It depends on you.

If local residents don’t take advantage of the service, it won’t last.

Our landfills will continue to grow and our children may one day live in world with very little green at all.
