NATCHEZ — Alderman Ernest “Tony” Fields is living up to his platform.
“I promised to meet with my constituents on a regular basis and I intend to make good on that promise,” he said.
So at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Zion Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Fields is inviting is Ward 4 residents to attend a town hall meeting.
“Hopefully together with their input and mine, we can get a shared vision for our ward,” Fields said.
Some of what will be discussed is a way to organize the neighborhood watch groups and make sure the existing groups are working.
He said other typical issues will probably arise, as well.
“I think I’m going to hear a lot of the regular things. They’ll probably want to talk about the condition of the neighborhood, the dilapidated houses, crime,” Fields said. “I’m pretty sure some are going to want to talk to me about education — those types of things.”
He said he hopes he has the answers for which the residents are looking.
If not, he said he’ll do whatever he can to answer them in the future.
“If I have to look into some things for them, I will do it and get back to them,” Fields said.
He also has ideas for those willing to do volunteer work to improve the ward.
“I’m going to bring out some things that we can do for ourselves, some self help things that are really going to help our neighborhoods,” he said.
An example would be to organize a volunteer group for neighborhood improvement and there are grants available for such groups.
Fields said this could be a good initiative for all the wards to pursue.
“I hope it catches on,” he said.
But his main objective is to fulfill a promise that got him elected.
“Like I said, it’s something that I promised to do and in doing it, it’s going to make me a more effective alderman,” Field said.
He said he plans to meet quarterly with his constituents.
