Truck hits gas pump, burns

Ferriday — Tyson Durham said he wasn’t exactly sure what made him temporarily lose consciousness and cross against two lanes of oncoming traffic Monday evening.
But when his pickup truck came to rest, and he regained consciousness, Durham, 28, had crashed his vehicle into a gas pump at Billups gas station.
“When I came to, (my truck) was on fire,” Durham said.
Ferriday Fire Chief Joe Sontoyo said only the truck, not the gas pump, caught fire.
“It was a very dangerous situation,” Sontoyo said. “It could have been a lot worse.”
The accident happened when Durham was headed to Ridgecrest, near the intersection of E.E. Wallace Boulevard and Georgia Avenue.
Sontoyo said Durham had a seizure, crashed into another vehicle and then ran into the gas pump.
But Durham said the entire situation is difficult to remember.
“I blurred out for a minute,” Durham said.
And Durham said he has no recollection of hitting any other vehicles in the accident.
Durham said he’s does not have a history of epilepsy or seizures, but has had other moments, like Monday’s, since he was 18.
However, Durham said they normally happen when he’s falling asleep — never while driving.
Witnesses at the scene said the driver of the second vehicle had to be taken by ambulance for medical treatment.
While Sontoyo said he was not exactly sure what happened, the blue sedan, with a South Dakota license plate, came to rest behind a house across the street from the gas station.
Durham said he was not injured in the accident.
“I guess I got lucky,” he said.
