Ferriday’s win not enough to know for sure about playoffs

FERRIDAY — Despite already being in a deep hole in District 2-2A at 0-3, the Ferriday Trojans needed a win over Lake Providence Friday night to keep their playoff hopes alive.

And a win is what Ferriday got as the Trojans celebrated Senior Night with a 28-0 win over Lake Providence. But as head coach Freddie Harrison said, it will be Sunday before the Trojans find out their fate as far as the playoffs are concerned.

“I’m about 80 percent sure that we should get into the top 32. We should have taken care of business early in the season,” Harrison said. “But even if this was their (seniors) last game, they came out ready to play.”

Harrison said this was a big win for Ferriday in more ways than one.

“If you take the playoffs aside, it was a must-win for us as far as getting to .500. This was the first year that they were not district champions.”

It’s the same Ferriday team that lost to Jonesboro-Hodge and Sterlington by a combined score of 56-12 in its first two district games.

Of course, the Trojans also needed some help if they were to somehow be one of Class 2A’s top 32 teams and possibly get a wild-card berth.

Ferriday Trojans quarterback Rodney Lawson scored on a quarterback keeper from 1 yard out and Neico Amado scored on a 20-yard run as Ferriday (5-5, 1-3) jumped out to a 14-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Bobby Madison added a pair of touchdown runs to round out the scoring.

Ferriday went into the game at No. 36 in the latest Class 2A power ratings even though it went into the game at 4-5 overall and winless in district play. Lake Providence was at No. 29 despite having the same overall record as Ferriday and a 1-2 record in district play.

However, the Panthers (4-6, 1-3) may have played themselves right out of a possible playoff berth with the shutout loss.
