Centreville — The Tigers have proven their point.

With a 39-8 win over River Oaks, Centreville Academy has shown it’s in position for another MPSA AA Championship.

Zack Sinclair was the workhorse for the Tigers, rushing for 217 yards and four touchdowns on 26 carries. Three of those were in the second quarter, giving Centreville a 25-0 lead at the half.

Cliff Hurst and Hunter Brabham each added a score.

And the Tigers’ defense was just as strong, keeping the Mustangs in the red for neagtive 26 yards rushing and total yards, recovering two fumbles.

In fact, River Oaks didn’t even score until midway through the fourth quarter.

Now the Tigers will face Bowling Green, which upset District 4-AA champion Brookhaven 28-26 this past Friday.

The two are familiar foes, with Trinity defeating the Buccaneers 41-11 earlier this season.

Trinity also made a show for the state title with a 17-7 win against Simpson Academy, although the Saints offense was not in its usual form.

Coach David King said with the team still suffering from injuries to big playmakers, the Saints had to focus more on defense and steady play.

Trinity’s defense allowed 139 yards rushing to Simpson, including a 73-yard rush late in the fourth quarter that had no impact on the game.

Two important pass plays pretty much made the game for the Saints, a 65-yarder to Wells Middleton from Givonni Dent in the first quarter and a 34-yard connection between the two in the third.

Now the Saints will have a visit from Oak Forest in the second round on Friday.

The Jackets, who upset Central Private in overtime for a 28-22 win this past Friday, will be Trinity’s second-round opponent for the second-consecutive time.

Huntington will move on to round two of the MPSA A playoffs after stomping all over Newton County Academy 44-24 Friday.

Although the Hounds did not complete a single pass, they still recorded 347 yards thanks to outstanding rushing by Kevin Brown and Jeremy Randall.

The two combined for 276 yards and four scores.

Huntington will now travel to face Porter’s Chapel, a team that is 12-0 and 4-0 in District 5 play. But despite the impressive record, the Eagles just barely beat Tallulah Academy, 10-0 in round one.

The Hounds defeated Tallulah 58-49 earlier this season.

Coach Chad Harkins hopes his team’s defense will step up a little more in the next game, but he feels confident that if it doesn’t, his offense will have it covered.
