FERRIDAY — After being held scoreless in the first half, Ashley Morrison was a force inside for ACCS as she scored 12 points as the Lady Rebels rallied to defeat Huntington 47-36 Tuesday night.
Morrison led a balanced scoring attack for ACCS, which remained undefeated and improved to 3-0 on the season under first-year head coach Melanie Hall. Sara Beth Fuller had 11 points and Sabrina Elgard added 10 points.
“That was the difference in the game. They got at us with Ashley in the middle in the second half,” Huntington first-year head coach Tyler Pere’ said. “They stayed in their 2-3 zone. They didn’t press. They played a little man-to-man at one point.”
Hall, however, didn’t want to single out one player as the key to the Lady Rebels’ win. Instead, she said it was a team effort.
“It was an ugly win, but it was a ‘W’”, Hall said. “I’m proud of the girls’ effort. We give God the glory. We’re going to keep working and keep trying to get better. They gritted it out. They did what they had to do and fought hard.”
Huntington led by as many as five points in the second quarter before getting into foul trouble. Three Lady Hounds players had two fouls each and Pere’ couldn’t afford to keep them on the court. That allowed the Lady Rebels to cut the score to one point, 20-19, at halftime.
“That’s what I wanted to see from my girls was some improvement,” Pere’ said. “It was a good ball game at the end of three quarters. Going into the middle of the fourth quarter it was anybody’s ball game. They hustled the whole game.”
Led by Emilee Johns and Sara Hoover, Huntington (1-4) was right with ACCS as the second half got under way and the Lady Rebels knew they would be for a battle. By the time the third quarter was over, the Lady Hounds were only down by one point, 31-30.
But Huntington ran out of steam in the fourth quarter and ACCS took advantage. The Lady Rebels put the game away by outscoring the Lady Hounds 16-6.
“I don’t have but seven players, which makes it tough. AC played a good game,” Pere’ said. “They have more size than us. They dominated us on the offensive boards. They got way more second shots than we did.”
The varsity boys’ game was cancelled due to the fact that Huntington’s football team is still in the Class A South State playoffs.
ACCS will travel to Woodville to take on WCCA for four games beginning at 4 p.m. Huntington’s games at Silliman on Friday have been cancelled due to the Hounds’ playoff game at Porter’s Chapel in Vicksburg. Huntington’s basketball teams will next play at the Silliman Tournament in Jackson, La., along with Trinity Episcopal and Centreville, next week.
