5A Natchez girls overtake 3A Franklin County

MEADVILLE — Thursday night’s showdown between the Class 5A Natchez High Lady Bulldogs and the Class 3A Franklin County Lady Dawgs was a seesaw battle between the two teams.

In the end, Natchez High held on for a 64-61 win despite a valiant effort by Franklin County in the fourth quarter. The key to the victory for the visiting Lady Bulldogs was a 21-15 edge over the host Lady Dawgs in the second quarter.

Alia Frank led Natchez High (3-2) in scoring with a game-high 21 points and Keosha Bradley had 18 points. Monique Starks and CeeCee Davis were tops in scoring for Franklin County (1-2) with 14 points each and Detrick Winding followed with 10 points.

WCCA girls 43, ACCS 33

WOODVILLE — Allie Fontenot led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points and Teri Fisher added 10 points as the Lady Rams turned to their defense in the second quarter to hand the Lady Rebels their first loss of the season Thursday night.

“We turned up the pressure in the second quarter. And we got a lot (of points) of off turnovers,” WCCA coach Ray Olive said. “We put on a lot of full-court pressure in the second and third quarters. We matched their intensity.”

WCCA (2-2) outscored ACCS 16-7 in the second quarter and 14-8 in the third quarter to take a 34-20 lead. They also won the game by holding Sara Beth Fuller to just six points. Ashley Morrison led the Lady Rebels (3-1) with 13 points.

“We were strong in the second and third and strong enough to finish off in the fourth,” Olive said. “Fuller and Morrison are excellent offensive players. It was an exciting game.”

Tensas Academy girls 68, Franklin Academy 15

WINNSBORO, La. — Mary Miller Ratcliff scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Lady Chiefs to a 53-point win over the Lady Cougars Thursday night at the Franklin Academy Cotton Classic Doubleheader.

Ratcliff was one of three players for Tensas Academy (3-1) to score in double figures. Jordan Leake added 13 points and Mary Elizabeth Crigler chipped in with 12 points. The Lady Chiefs jumped out to a 26-5 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back.

WCCA boys 62, ACCS 42

WOODVILLE — Todd Gonda led four WCCA players in double figures with a game-high 20 points as the Rams overcame a slow start to defeat a Rebels team playing its first game of the season.

WCCA (2-0) trailed ACCS 10-9 at the end of the first quarter, but took the momentum away in the second quarter en route to a 23-19 halftime lead. The Rams put the game away with a 22-11 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Tip McKenzie had 14 points while Christopher Houghton and Luke Whitaker had 10 points each for the Rams. The Rebels were led by Jordan McElroy with 10 points.

Natchez High boys 62, Franklin County 24

MEADVILLE — Johnathan Griffin led a balanced scoring attack for visiting Natchez High with 15 points in a win over host Franklin County in the battle of the Bulldogs Thursday night.

Brandon Holden finished with 11 points and Kenny Jackson had 10 points for Natchez High, which improved to 3-2 on the season. Alvie Pernell scored 10 points and D. Bowie added nine points for Franklin County (0-2).
