Trinity’s playoff dreams end with Oak Forest

NATCHEZ — Two very big things went very wrong for the Trinity Saints Friday night in the Class AA South State semifinals.

They couldn’t run the ball on offense, and they couldn’t stop the run on defense.

Throw in a couple of special teams blunders and you have the recipe for a 30-7 loss to Oak Forest that bounced the Saints out of the playoffs.

“It was just an old fashioned butt-whipping,” Trinity coach David King said. “They were more physical than we were. They just handed it to us on both sides of the ball.”

The game was played on an incredibly wet and muddy field, which made it almost impossible to get a solid passing game going.

Oak Forest completed just two-of-nine passes for 30 yards while the Saints were nine-of-19 for 166 yards. However, Trinity completed just two passes in the second half.

Oak Forest took an early lead in the first three minutes of the game after they recovered a fumbled punt by Trinity’s Brandon Daggs.

Jonathan Burrell scored on a 32-yard run on the next play to put the Yellow Jackets up 6-0.

Oak Forest expanded its lead to 14-0 with three minutes left in the second quarter when James Petterson scored on a 28-yard run and Burrell ran in the two-point conversion.

Trinity took back some momentum on its next drive when it drove down the field behind the arm of quarterback Givonni Dent.

Dent completed four passes on the drive, including a 14-yard toss to Kent King for a touchdown with 1:07 remaining in the half.

Trinty had a chance to tie the score when Wells Middleton intercepted a pass on the 23-yard line with 50 seconds remaining in the first half, but Dent threw a pick inside the 10-yard line on the next play to keep the score 14-7 at halftime.

Oak Forest came out in the second half in a completely different offense and abandoned its passing game.

While the Yellow Jackets ran every play out of a shotgun formation in the first half, they mostly ran a double wing in the second half and gave the ball to Burrell on 18 of their 24 second-half plays.

The new offense worked perfectly on Oak Forest’s opening drive of the second half, as they drove 75 yards for a touchdown, capped off by Burrell’s 5-yard run.

“We had a lead at halftime ,and we felt like that would be a little safer offense in the second half with the field conditions the way they were,” Oak Forest coach Jason Brabham said. “I felt if we just get the ball in (Burrell’s) hands, good things would happen.

And did they ever. Burrell rushed 30 times in the game for 203 yards and scored three touchdowns.

“He’s tough and plays with 100 percent effort all the time,” Brabham said of Burrell. “What more can I say? He’s a great young man.”

While Oak Forest was chewing up the yards on the ground, Trinity could get nothing going.

The Saints rushed for just 18 yards on 23 attempts in the game.

“They just whipped us,” King said.

“I think they were a little hungrier than we were. We’re used to a little bit better effort than we got tonight.”

Oak Forest put the game on ice with five minutes left when Burrell scored on a 1-yard plunge.

The Yellow Jacket defense put its exclamation point on the game 18 seconds later when it sacked Dent in the end zone for a safety.

Oak Forest (7-5) now advances to play Centreville in the South State championship game while Trinity’s season ends with a 11-2 record.

While King was disappointed in the loss, he did congratulate his seniors for a good four years.

“The seniors were part of a state championship (in 2006) and won 11 games or more three years in a row,” King said.

“I’m proud of them.”
