WINNSBORO, La. — Led by Jasmine Upchurch and Chante Poole, the Ferriday Lady Trojans began their season with a 57-41 win over the Franklin Parish Lady Patriots Tuesday night.
Upchurch finished with a game-high 19 points and Poole chipped in with 15 points. The outcome of the game would have been a lot closer had it not been for a 23-8 advantage by Ferriday in the second quarter.
Despite the win, there was one aspect of the game that Ferriday head coach Lisa Abron was none too pleased with.
“A lot of turnovers. I wish I had the stats on that, but we had way too many turnovers,” she said. “You could tell it was the first game of the season. A hope that was just first-game jitters.”
The Lady Trojans (1-0) did something they had never done before since Abron has been their head coach — start the game in a man-to-man defense. She described it as “something that got us going.”
“We’re expecting to do great things this season. Our defense looked pretty good. Overall, I was pleased with the win,” Abron said.
Natchez High 64, Wilkinson County 46
WOODVILLE — After Natchez High struggled to put away a feisty Wilkinson County team through three quarters, the Lady Bulldogs finally did so in the fourth quarter for an 18-point win Tuesday night that improved their record to 6-2.
Keosha Bradley led Natchez High with 24 points. Jameka Watkins finished with 13 points and Alia Frank, coming off her 30-point performance in a win over McComb at the Brookhaven Tournament just 24 hours earlier, scored 12 points.
Wilkinson County, searching for its first win of the season, stayed right with Natchez High in the first quarter, which ended in a 9-9 tie. The Lady Wildcats suddenly found themselves behind the eight ball after being outscored 18-7 in the second quarter and trailing 27-16 at halftime.
Led by Breshinna Day and Tyeshia Lee, the Lady Wildcats refused to go away as they used a 20-16 edge in the third quarter to cut the Lady Bulldogs’ lead to just seven points. Day led the Lady Wildcats with 19 points and Lee added 12 points.
But the Lady Bulldogs were too much in the fourth quarter as they scored 21 points while holding the Lady Wildcats (0-3) to just 10 points.
Riverdale 42, Tensas Academy 41
ST. JOSEPH, La. — Taylor Giddings’s three-point play with 0:01 left allowed Riverdale to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat as the Lady Rebels rallied to defeat the Lady Chiefs Tuesday night.
Riverdale had the ball with 15 seconds left, but Tensas nearly stole the ball only to have it go out of bounds. That gave the Lady Rebels another opportunity. After a missed shot, Giddings grabbed the rebound, made the put-back and was fouled. She made the free throw to give them a one-point lead. The Lady Chiefs’ desperation shot was no good.
“We played hard. We played a lot better than we did last night (at Trinity Episcopal). We handled the pressure better,” Lady Chiefs head coach Chuck Bauerle said.
Mary Miller Ratcliff led Tensas Academy (3-3) with 16 points and Mary Elizabeth Crigler had 12 points. Giddings led Riverdale with 12 points and Melissa Savell chipped in with nine points.
Monterey 49, LaSalle 44
MONTEREY, La. — Monterey nearly let a 14-point halftime lead slip away in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Wolves managed to hold on for a five-point win over the Lady Tigers Tuesday night.
Monterey (3-6) outscored LaSalle 12-5 in both the first and second quarters for a 24-10 lead at halftime. The Lady Tigers were only able to knock one point of the Lady Wolves’ lead in the third quarter, but they went on a tear in the fourth quarter.
LaSalle scored 19 points in the final quarter, but Monterey did enough on its end of the court to make sure it would come away with the victory.
Kendall Lipsey led the Lady Wolves with a game-high 22 points while Brooke Baker and Ellen Bairnsfather had eight points each. L. Smith led the Lady Tigers with 16 points and Ranson added 12 points.
Vidalia 63, Sicily Island 40
SICILY ISLAND, La. — Four Vidalia players scored in double figures, led by Alaina Burns’ 14 points, as the Lady Vikings used a big second half to defeat the Lady Tigers Tuesday night.
Angelica Branson did her part to keep Sicily Island in the game. The first quarter ended in a 10-10 tie and Vidalia (1-0) only led by three points at halftime. Even though Branson led all scorers with 31 points, she didn’t get enough help from her teammates and it showed in the second half.
Led by Burns, Gabrielle Wagoner, Kisha Swanson and Dejanae Harris, Vidalia pulled away from Sicily Island after halftime. The Lady Vikings outscored the Lady Tigers 16-8 in the third quarter and 18-6 in the fourth quarter. Wagoner finished with 13 points while Swanson had 12 points and Harris had 10 points.
Block 56, Tensas Parish 29
ST. JOSEPH, La. — Block got big contributions from four players as the Lady Bears routed the Lady Panthers Tuesday night.
Arnesha Bears led Block in scoring with 18 points and Shateca Collins finished with 13 points. Desiree Savage had 12 points and seven rebounds. Felicia Woods was also a force on the board for the Lady Bears as she grabbed 12 rebounds.
The Lady Bears jumped out to an 18-4 lead at the end of the first quarter and was never seriously threatened by the Lady Panthers the rest of the game.
Parklane 46, WCCA 35
MCCOMB — Parklane’s Lindsay Clark and Kellen Choate combined for 36 points — one more point than WCCA scored as a team — as the Lady Pioneers defeated the Lady Rams Tuesday night.
Clark led all scorers with 19 points and Choate finished with 17 points. The first quarter was a sign of things to come for both teams in this game. Even though Parklane scored 11 points, it held WCCA (3-3) to just three points.
Allie Fontenot was the only Lady Rams player to score in double figures as she ended up with 14 points.
