BATON ROUGE — Alcorn State’s losing streak continued Thursday night in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge.
LSU (2-0) made light work of the Braves (0-3), defeating them 77-45.
“LSU has extremely good athletes,” Alcorn State coach Larry Smith said. “They’re long and athletic and they protected the paint extremely well, but you still have to attack and make the other team do their job.”
LSU started the game firing on all cylinders, taking a 21-2 lead in the first eight minutes of the contest.
The run was highlighted by a five point outburst by senior guard Garrett Temple – his first points of the season – and six points from junior guard Alex Farrer, featuring a near-impossible layup after being fouled.
Alcorn State did not go away quietly, however, and junior guard Troy Jackson scored seven points of his own to cut the LSU lead back down to 12.
This would be the closest the Braves would get the rest of the half as LSU senior guard Marcus Thornton ended the run with a fast break dunk to make the score 23-9 in favor of the Tigers.
“[Jackson] got a couple of tough shots off that he knocked down, but in the second half, we did a good job on him,” Temple said. “It was all about defense at the end.”
