RUSTON, La. — After three quarters and the score at 10-6, it looked like Cedar Creek was on its way to pulling off another upset in the Class 1A Playoffs.

But Block, with its power running game led by John Bloodsaw and VaShawn Davis, had other ideas as the Bears scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to take a 26-10 win over the Cougars in the regional round.

The keys to the win for No. 9 seed Block (8-3) were the 1-2 punch of Bloodsaw and Davis as well as a change in defense made by defensive coordinator Stephen Collins. After being torched by Cedar Creek’s quarterback for much of the game, the Bears went from a zone defense to more of a man-to-man defense.

Bloodsaw had 16 carries for 161 yards and one touchdown while Davis had 13 carries for 107 yards and one touchdown.

“We went to a tight man coverage. It allowed us to get some more pressure on them,” Block head coach Benny Vault Jr. said. “They were killing us early with the out routes. Collins did a good job switching things up.”

The result was two key interceptions by the Bears’ defense that allowed them to stay in the game and eventually rally in the fourth quarter.

Block’s only points of the first half came on a 12-yard pass from Curdarious Johnson to A.J. Calhoun just 15 seconds into the second quarter. At halftime the Bears were down 10-6 after the Cougars (5-6) made a 33-yard field goal with 1:36 remaining in the first half.

After a scoreless third quarter, Block kept doing what had gotten it this far — run the football.

“Offensively, we kept at it. We had a block here and a block there that kept us from getting some big runs,” Vault said.

Chris Collins scored on a 5-yard run with 10:37 to go that gave Block the lead for good at 12-10. Bloodsaw then scored on a 70-yard run and Johnson ran in for the two-point conversion and a 20-10 lead. Davis finished the night off with an 8-yard touchdown run with 2:45 left.

Block advanced to the Class 1A quarterfinals with the win and will travel to Port Sulphur, La. to take on the top-seeded and 10-1 South Plaquemines Hurricanes, who defeated No. 17 seed Varnado 56-0. That was South Plaquemines’ eighth straight win, all shutouts.

“We’ve been waiting for this one. You’ve got to win a game that no one expects you to win if you want to be a championship team,” Vault said.
