Don’t ignore holiday stressors

This morning, millions of Americans will get up and head out to begin the “official” 2008 holiday shopping season. But for many Americans, today begins one of the most stressful times of the year.
As national retailers entice customers with rock-bottom prices on a few select sale items, no doubt we’ll see some insane, even rude, behavior by some who will fight for a chance to get a cheap plasma TV.
Unfortunately, the holiday sales insanity isn’t the only arrival Americans should expect. For millions of other Americans, the holidays are a difficult emotional time.
From reminders of loved ones lost to the added stress of feeling obligated to cram social functions into your life, the holidays can be extremely stressful.
Mental health experts say that post-holiday season is their busy season for picking up new clients after the frustrations of “surviving” the holidays gets too much.
The holidays are supposed to be a time of joy and a time of togetherness, however, for many that’s simply not the case.
Remembering how stressful this time of year can be for some friends, neighbors and relatives is important as the days until Christmas near.
The stresses of the holiday season could be diminished if all decided to treat one another carefully and respectfully.
And, perhaps more important, recognizing high stress levels in others and helping them deal with the stress. We shouldn’t allow the hunt for material things — like cheap flat screen TVs — get in the way of helping one another through the rough patches of life.
