NATCHEZ — Judge Forest “Al” Johnson sentenced an Adams County man Thursday to the fullest extent of the law — 15 years in prison — after he pleaded guilty to robbing an 87-year-old woman in November.
Johnson ordered David L. Coleman, 39, 714A Lower Woodville Road, to serve a full sentence for the charge of simple robbery, Assistant District Attorney Walt Brown said.
The robbery occurred on a Sunday afternoon Nov. 21 in the parking lot outside Southside Market.
Coleman reportedly stole the victim’s purse with so much force that he knocked her to the ground.
The victim was hospitalized after suffering a broken arm, broken teeth and facial abrasions, Brown said.
Coleman reportedly got away with the purse, $7 and a few personal items.
Brown said the victim, now 88-years-old, attended the sentencing. A victim’s advocate with the district attorney’s office read a letter from the victim before the court prior to sentencing.
The victim’s daughter also read a letter describing the impact the incident had on her mother, Brown said.
Police arrested Coleman days after the incident after witnesses described his car, which led the Natchez Police Department to Coleman’s residence.
Police Chief Mike Mullins said Coleman has a lengthy criminal history of misdemeanors including one domestic violence charge.
In other court news:
LaKendrick D. Allen, 22, who was reportedly involved in the alleged beating and robbing of an elderly couple in February 2010, pleaded guilty Thursday to simple robbery, Brown said.
Allen, 3563 Seal Road, Roxie, as well as Deon D. Woods, 19, 29A Brenham Ave., were both originally indicted on two counts of aggravated assault and one count of armed robbery.
The elderly couple was at home when two men reportedly knocked on their door. When the man answered, he was allegedly pistol-whipped by Woods, who also reportedly pistol-whipped the woman when she tried to call 911.
The judge postponed Allen’s sentencing, and he is expected to testify in a trial for Woods, which is scheduled for Aug. 10 in Amite County.
