Vidalia — The defending champions of the Ronnie Brown Memorial Basketball Tournament held on to their title for the second year in a row as the Vidalia Vikings defeated the Ferriday Trojans 60-50 in the championship game Saturday night.
Ferriday (2-5) jumped out to an early 9-0 lead but Vidalia (7-1) finally scored on a Gary Stewart lay-up to get on the scoreboard.
“We are still having trouble with the interior defense,” Vidalia head coach Robert Sanders said.
Vidalia then outscored Ferriday by 10 points in the second and went into the locker room with a 30-24 halftime lead.
Gary Stewart, the Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, scored 12 points in the second half as a part of his 22-point performance and held the Trojans at bay for the rest of the game.
“We started off on the slow side,” Sanders said. “Gary has been waking up though and he is coming around.”
The Vikings also had great performances by Torrey Dixon and Quatrell Thomas who scored 14 points a piece.
DeMarco Lewis led the Trojans with 19 points while teammates Orlando Davis, Levier Pryor, and Carlton Robinson all scored eight apiece.
