NATCHEZ — Alcorn State’s football season may be over, but the Braves are still receiving recognition from the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Two Alcorn players were named all-conference, it was announced Tuesday.

Senior linebacker Lee Robinson, who led the Braves in tackles this season, was recognized as first-team All-SWAC by the conference’s coaches and sports information directors, along with selected members of the media.

Robinson, from Amite County High School, ranked fifth in the SWAC with 111 tackles (64 solo and 44 assisted), averaging 9.2 tackles per game in 12 games this season for the Braves.

He also recorded 3.5 sacks and 10.5 tackles for a loss of 38 yards this season and forced three fumbles.

“It’s great for him because he’s a guy we have put out in front of our team,” said Alcorn State coach Ernest Jones. “We told him at the beginning of the year that we would go as high as he goes.”

Robinson has never been nominated for the award, despite seeing action in nearly every game over four full seasons at Alcorn.

Jones said finally being recognized says a lot about the linebacker.

“He provided our team with great senior leadership,” said linebackers coach Zach Shay. “Not only is he a very good football player, but he’s a better person. He does a great job in the classroom, and he represents the university and the football team with a very high level of character and class.”

Senior offensive lineman Bronson Carvalho was named to the second-team All-SWAC offense.

It is the second time the 6-foot-3-inch, 335-pound lineman from Kapaa, Hawaii, has been honored.

“It’s another good statement to have another player honored,” Jones said.

Four Jackson State players were named to the first team.

Offensive tackle Mikael Hershaw, defensive end Marcus Benard, linebacker Marcellus Speaks and cornerback Domonique Johnson were all recognized.

Speaks, who led the league in tackles with 115 (54 solo and 61 assisted), received the same award last season.

He averaged 10.5 tackles per game this season with five sacks.

Johnson had 13 pass breakups and four interceptions for 104 yards, including one for a 60-yard touchdown, leading the SWAC in pass defense.

Benard recorded 16 sacks for the Tigers this season.

Center Eric Jones, tight end Marcel Frost, kicker Eric Perri and safety Malcolm Palmer were named to the second team for the Tigers.

Grambling State led the conference with nine selections, and Southern receiver Juamorris Stewart was the only unanimous selection, leading the SWAC with 6.9 receptions for 103.5 yards per game.
