NATCHEZ — The Natchez Dixie Youth 12-year-old baseball team won the District 6 championship with a dominating pitching performance in the third game of a best-of-three series with Pine Hills Friday night at Duncan Park.
Starting pitcher Gabe Smith and reliever Brock Farmer combined to throw a no hitter against Pine Hills in Natchez’s 5-0 win.
Smith hurled four innings for Natchez. He struck out six Pine Hills batters and walked four. Farmer came in to throw the last two innings and only allowed one walk to go with three strikeouts.
The win sends the 12s to the South State Tournament in Hattiesburg as a No. 1 seed.
“We beat a great Pine Hills team,” Natchez coach Gary Farmer said. “Our pitching was excellent, and we came back really fired up (in the second game).”
Pine Hills forced a deciding game 3 with a 10-7 victory over Natchez in the first game Friday night.
“We got in the dugout after the first game, and we played bad,” coach Farmer said. “They came in with their heads up ready for the second game to start. They never thought they were going to lose.”
Natchez’s Gage Dossett led his team offensively with a night to remember at the plate.
In game one Dossett went 3-for-3 with a home run, two doubles and four RBIs. He followed that performance going 3-for-3 again in game 2 with a two-run homer and two singles.
Coach Farmer said Dossett set the stage for Natchez’s victory in the nightcap with his first-inning home run.
Coach Farmer said he was also pleased with his defense in the second game, as the 12s finished the game with zero errors.
Pine Hills put the pressure on Natchez by winning game 1 with an offensive outburst against three different Natchez pitchers.
Pine Hills plated 10 runs on 10 hits, including a grand slam by D’Kenyace Roberts. Ridge Thornton added a solo shot for Pine Hills.
But, Pine Hills was unable to muster up more offensive success against the tandem of Smith and Brock in game 2 and Natchez took the title.
“Our pitching really came to tonight,” coach Farmer said. “It feels great to be district champions.”
Natchez will now have two weeks off before they travel to play in the south state tournament, coach Farmer said.
“The two week break is going to be tough, because they get tired of practice. We have to keep them focused,” he said.
South state begins July 22, but coach Farmer said is unsure of who his team will match up against.
“We learned that we can’t overlook any team we’ll be playing because they are all really good,” he said.
