Vidalia — It was a hard fought game on both ends, but foul trouble and a faulty defense would be Ferriday’s demise as the Trojans lost to Vidalia for the fourth time this season 65-48.

Vidalia (14-1) started off with seven straight points from Gary Stewart and began to pull away early before Ferriday woke up and pulled to within six at the half.

The Vikings turned on the press and forced turnovers but the Trojans were stingy and kept fighting back throughout the third quarter.

Ferriday would eventually pull within five, but began playing carelessly and found themselves in foul trouble at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

“I saw that we needed to change our defense in the second half,” Vidalia head coach Robert Sanders said. “It worked for our benefit. We still need to work on our defensive transitions though.”

Vidalia senior Rolandin Webster scored 11 points in the fourth quarter to help the Vikings pull away and take their fourth win over the Trojans this year.

“Our margin for error is not very large,” Ferriday head coach Glenn Henderson said. “We played very inconsistent and they need to learn how to be committed to what they are taught to do.”

Quartrell Thomas led all scorers with 19 points while Gary Stewart added 17 for the Vikings.

Carlton Robinson and DeMarco Lewis both scored 13 points to lead Ferriday.

Vidalia and Ferriday will face each other once again next Monday in the Sicily Island Tournament.

Ferriday girls 53, Vidalia 22

Vidalia’s girls put up a fight for the first three quarters, but ran out of gas in the fourth and allowed the Ferriday Lady Trojans to take a 53-22 win Monday night.

The Lady Vikings were within two after the first quarter and took advantage of a Ferriday team who was without its point guard.

“I was pleased with the way we played, especially for the first three quarters,” Vidalia head coach Damus Smith said. “We’re really short on the bench, and I’m still trying to find a shooting guard.”

Jasmine Upchurch, who scored only four points in the first half, turned up the heat and poured 16 points on the Lady Vikings in the second half as the Lady Trojans pulled away with a 23-point fourth quarter.

“We really missed having our point guard tonight,” Ferriday head coach Lisa Abron said.

“We came out slow tonight. That’s been the story for the last couple of games for us.”

Upchurch led all scorers with 20 points while her teammate Jalessia Davis scored 16 for Ferriday.

Gabrielle Wagoner led Vidalia with a nine-point effort.

The Lady Vikings and Lady Trojans will face each other yet again Monday in the Sicily Island Tournament.
