SICILY ISLAND, La. — The rivalry between the Ferriday and Vidalia varsity girls basketball teams continued to be one-sided in favor of the Lady Trojans as they hammered the Lady Vikings 67-15 Monday afternoon at the Sicily Island Tournament.

Ferriday’s Jasmine Upchurch scored 25 points — 10 more than Vidalia had as a team. And to make matters worse for the Lady Vikings, their point total went down from the first quarter to the second quarter and then they were held without a point in the third quarter.

Ferriday had a 15-7 lead over Vidalia at the end of the first quarter before taking control of the game with a 28-2 advantage in the second quarter and an 18-0 run in the third quarter for a commanding 61-9 lead.

Jalessia Davis added 14 points and Chante Poole chipped in with 11 points for Ferriday, which improved to 17-1 on the season. The Lady Trojans will take on Tensas Parish today at 3:30 p.m.

Vidalia, which was ousted from the single-elimination tournament, was led by Dejanae Harris with five points.

Trinity Episcopal boys 62,

Marshall Academy 35

BROOKHAVEN — In a battle of top 5 teams in Class AA, the third-ranked Trinity Episcopal Saints had little problem defeating the fourth-ranked Marshall Academy Patriots Monday night in one semifinal game at the Brookhaven Academy Tournament.

The win by Trinity Episcopal (11-3) will likely set up a showdown in today’s boys’ championship game against the second-ranked Brookhaven Academy Cougars, provided they defeated the Copiah Academy Colonels in Monday’s other semifinal game. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:45 p.m., but it will likely be a little later than that because several games in this tournament have been behind schedule.

Even though Marshall Academy tried to hang tough with Trinity Episcopal in the first half, the Saints had too many go-to players for the Patriots to contain – or at least try to contain. Five Saints players ended with at least eight points in the game.

The Saints jumped out to a 14-7 lead after one quarter of play and were never really threatened by the Patriots the rest of the way. By halftime the Saints were ahead 32-19 and rolled from there.

Andrew Johnson led Trinity Episcopal with 16 points while Brandon Daggs had 11 points and Giovanni Dents scored 10 points. Marshall Academy (10-9) was led by Jake Omedio with nine points and Caleb Byrd with eight points.

Cathedral girls 54, St. Aloysius 40

WESSON — Ana Perry led four Cathedral players in double figures with 13 points as the Lady Green Wave defeated longtime rival St. Aloysius Monday afternoon at the Wesson Tournament.

The first half was an up-and-down battle as Cathedral jumped out to a 16-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, only to see St. Aloysius get back in the game with a 12-8 edge in the second quarter to trail by just three points at halftime.

The Lady Green Wave was only able to add two points to its lead by the end of the third quarter, but they pulled away by outscoring the Lady Flashes 16-7 in the fourth quarter.

Ginny Daggett added 12 points and Mae Durkin and Epiphany Jackson each had 10 points for Cathedral (4-9). Tori Hines led St. Aloysius with 12 points and Katie Koestler chipped in with 11 points.

Vidalia boys 61, Ferriday 46

SICILY ISLAND, La. — Just when it looked like the Ferriday Trojans had a chance to finally defeat the Vidalia Vikings this season, along came the third quarter – one that Ferriday would like to forget.

Ferriday led Vidalia 23-21 at halftime of their game Monday night at the Sicily Island Tournament. But when the third quarter was over, the Vikings had a 55-34 lead and went on to eliminate the Trojans from the tournament.

Even though Vidalia outscored Ferriday 32-11 in the third quarter and ended up winning the game by 15 points, that was the only quarter in which Vidalia had more points than Ferriday. The other three quarters the Trojans outscored the Vikings by a combined six points.

Gary Stewart led Vidalia (17-1) with a game-high 18 points. Quartrell Thomas finished with 15 points and Torrey Dixon had 14 points. The Vikings will take on Franklin Parish today at 8 p.m. Demarco Lewis had 17 points and Carlton Robinson had 11 points for Ferriday.

Franklin Parish defeated Block earlier in the day to knock the Bears out of the tournament. No other information on that game was available.

Wesson boys 78, Cathedral 47

WESSON — A 30-point second quarter by Wesson opened up a close game and Cathedral never recovered as the Cobras routed the Green Wave Monday night at the Wesson Tournament.

Wesson was only up 15-12 at the end of the first quarter before it went on an offensive scoring spree in the second quarter that gave the Cobras a 45-25 halftime lead. The hosts were not very gracious in the second half, either, as they continued to build on their lead.

Tyler Lumley led Wesson with 16 points while Josh Hood and Kyle Cross scored 11 points apiece. Daniel Huffines had 16 points to lead Cathedral (2-11), which will take on Bogue Chitto in the third-place game today at 4:30 p.m.

Hattiesburg girls 66, Natchez High 57

HATTIESBURG — The good news for the Natchez High Lady Bulldogs in Day 1 of the Hattiesburg High Holiday Classic was that Keosha Bradley scored 35 points.

The bad news was she was the only Lady Bulldogs player to score in double figures and that proved to be costly as they lost to the Hattiesburg Lady Tigers Monday night.

On the other hand, four Lady Tigers scored in double figures. Lenise Shillings and Tiffany Howard led the way with 13 points each while Celese Lampton and Samantha Fairley each contributed with 10 points.

But it took a 27-11 advantage in the third quarter for Hattiesburg to erase a seven-point halftime deficit and get the momentum on its side after Natchez High controlled the action throughout much of the first half. The Lady Bulldogs were unable to respond with a run of their own in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Bulldogs will take on Starkville today at 1:30 p.m.
