FAYETTE — Even though Jefferson County’s overall record is below the .500 mark, the Tigers cannot be counted out in Region 7-3A this season, especially after what they did to Amite County Tuesday night.

Jefferson County scored a combined 70 points in the second and third quarters to break open a close game and defeated the Trojans 106-59 to improve to 3-1 in region play.

The Tigers were only up by two points, 17-15, at the end of the first quarter. But once the second quarter started, the Trojans were in for a rude awakening and were not able to recover.

Jefferson County outscored Amite County 36-16 in the second quarter and 34-14 in the third quarter to open up a comfortable 87-45 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

“It was defensive intensity that led to points,” Tigers head coach LaRondrial Barnes said. “We were able to pressure them well with the front-end trap. That led to a lot of easy fast-break points. We went up 20 (actually 22) at halftime. We came out of the half and never let up. Continued good shooting and continued to attack.”

Even with the game out of hand, there was one thing left for the Tigers to do – reach the century mark, which they did late in the final quarter.

Davion Noble led Jefferson County (4-7 overall) with 26 points. Trellvion Gaines finished with 23 points and Terry Tenner scored 18 points. B.J. Johnson led Amite County with 15 points and J. Patterson added 14 points.

ACCS 67, Monterey 49

MONTEREY, La. — Even though Monterey went into Tuesday night’s first-ever game against ACCS with a better record than the Rebels, this turned out to be a much better game than expected.

After Monterey had cut ACCS’s lead to just two points at the end of the third quarter, it was all Rebels in the fourth quarter as they pulled away for an 18-point win over the Wolves.

Monterey could have let the game get out of hand after blowing a three-point lead at the end of the first quarter to trail by seven points at halftime. But the Wolves showed a lot of resilience in the third quarter and outscored the Rebels 18-13 to make the score 43-41 in favor of the visitors from Natchez.

But ACCS dominated the action on both ends of the court in the fourth quarter en route to outscoring Monterey 24-8.

Lee Swinney led ACCS (4-8) with a game-high 24 points and Joe Barksdale had 10 points. Josh Champion led Monterey (8-14) with 16 points and Ross Lipsey added 14 points.

Cathedral 47, Sacred Heart 35

HATTIESBURG — Not many people expected a Cathedral team with just one senior and the rest of the team being freshmen and sophomores to have won four games by now. Or to be 2-2 in Region 8-1A.

But the Green Wave have now done both after Tuesday night’s 12-point win on the road over the Crusaders to improve to 4-12 overall and reach the .500 mark in region play.

Cathedral held Sacred Heart to just two points in the opening quarter and was never really challenged after that. The Green Wave doubled their lead from seven at the end of the first quarter to 14 going into the fourth quarter.

Daniel Huffines led the Green Wave with 19 points and Carl Hammitte had 17 points. Sacred Heart (1-3 in Region 8-1A) was led by Jack Fitzpatrick with 16 points.

Huntington 76, Tensas Academy 25

FERRIDAY — Jeremy Randall and Tyler Peré each scored 20 points to lead the Huntington Hounds to one of its most lopsided wins in recent years as the routed the Tensas Academy Chiefs by 51 points Tuesday night in District 6-A action.

Huntington (8-8, 2-1) had its way with Tensas Academy from the opening tip all the way to the final buzzer. By the time the first quarter was over, the Hounds had enjoyed a 19-2 lead and once halftime arrived they were ahead 40-7.

Only three players managed to get in the scoring column for the Chiefs (1-8, 1-1). They were led by Jon Truman James with 17 points.

Centreville 64, Amite School Center 32

LIBERTY — Colby Lockwood scored 11 points and was one of six Centreville players to score at least seven points as the Tigers doubled up the Rebels Tuesday night in an MPSA District 5-AA game.

The first quarter set the tone for the game as Centreville (6-7, 1-1) scored 25 points while holding Amite School Center (0-13, 0-2) to just four points. The second quarter wasn’t any better for the Rebels as they were outscored by the Tigers 19-3 to trail at halftime 44-7.

Even though the Rebels played much better in the second half, the 37-point deficit at the break was way too much to overcome.

Blake Babel finished with nine points while Adam Perry, Jamie Dezendorf and Jason Todd Doughty each had eight points and Kyle Brown added seven points for Centreville. Justin Duck led Amite School Center with a game-high 14 points.

Franklin Academy 54, WCCA 44

WINNSBORO, La. — Tip McKenzie scored a game-high 25 points for the WCCA, but wasn’t able to get much help offensively from his teammates as the Rams lost the Franklin Academy Cougars Tuesday night in a District 6-A game.

In fact, only three other WCCA players managed to get in the scoring column. Todd Gonda was the Rams’ next leading scorer in the game with eight points.

The Rams had a 14-8 lead after one quarter of play, but the Cougars cut the lead to one point at halftime. WCCA (9-4, 2-1) increased its lead to seven points by the end of the third quarter, but Franklin Academy rallied to win the game thanks to a 20-3 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Ziggler led Franklin Academy with 20 points and Krotzler had 16 points.
