HATTIESBURG — Ana Perry scored a game-high 12 points and Ginny Daggett had 11 points as the Cathedral Lady Green Wave defeated the Sacred Heart Lady Crusaders 34-31 Tuesday night in Region 8-1A action.
Cathedral (5-10, 2-2) won the game despite poor shooting from the free-throw line. The Lady Green Wave missed 18 of their 28 free throws – something head coach Kathy Graning was not too happy with.
“We didn’t play well. (we were) terrible at the free-throw line, missed too many easy shots inside. We didn’t follow our shots with rebounding,” Graning said.
The Lady Green Wave scored 13 points in the first quarter while the Lady Crusaders were held to just eight points. Sacred Heart outscored Cathedral in each of the next two quarters to trail by just two going into the fourth quarter.
But Cathedral outscored Sacred Heart 8-7 in the fourth quarter to hold on for the win. That was the third straight quarter in which neither team reached double figures.
“It wasn’t too pretty. It was ugly, but it was a district win,” Graning said.
Amite County 52, Jefferson County 47
FAYETTE — Led by Tydesheaia Pool and Cikia Patterson, the Amite County Lady Trojans defeated the Jefferson County Lady Tigers in a Region 7-3A game Tuesday night.
Pool led Amite County with 23 points while Patterson finished with 20 points. The Lady Trojans trailed 11-9 at the end of the first quarter, but they outscored the Lady Tigers 16-14 in the second quarter to make it a 25-25 game at halftime.
Wells led all scorers with 25 points and White had 13 points.
ACCS 48, Monterey 36
MONTEREY, La. — The Lady Rebels played with a lot of emotion Tuesday night in their first-ever encounter with the Monterey Lady Wolves, as they rallied from early deficit to win by 12 points.
The Rebels made sure they won for head coach Melanie Hall, who was unable to be at the game because of her mother’s funeral.
Rick Fife had to take over the coaching duties for ACCS.
The Lady Rebels took a 16-10 edge in the second quarter that gave them a two-point lead at halftime.
They kept the momentum on their side by outscoring Monterey 15-4 in the third quarter for a 37-24 lead.
ACCS was led by Ashley Morrison with 20 points and Taylor Welch with 12 points.
WCCA 62, Franklin Academy 32
WINNSBORO, La. — Allie Fontenot led all scorers with 19 points while Caroline Walker added 12 points and Hannah Ashley chipped in with 11 points as the WCCA Lady Rams rolled to a 30-point win over the Franklin Academy Lady Cougars in MPSA District 6-A action Tuesday night.
WCCA (10-4, 2-1) jumped to a 15-7 lead after one quarter of play and by halftime was leading 33-13. The Lady Rams didn’t let up in the second half, not allowing the Lady Cougars any chance at all of getting back in the game.
Tensas Academy 43,
Huntington 27
FERRIDAY — A balanced offense to go along with a stifling defense allowed the Tensas Academy Lady Chiefs to defeat the Huntington Lady Hounds Tuesday night to remain undefeated in District 6-A.
From the opening tip, Huntington was in for a long first quarter. Tensas Academy didn’t let the Lady Hounds get too many open looks at the basket throughout the game’s first eight minutes. The result was a 16-4 lead for the Lady Chiefs.
While the Lady Chiefs’ defense was pressuring Huntington in the second quarter, their offense went flat. By halftime they were up 21-10.
But the third quarter was a mirror image of the first quarter, and the Lady Chiefs had a 33-14 lead over the Lady Hounds heading into the fourth quarter.
