VICKSBURG — When Trinity Episcopal travels north to Vicksburg during the basketball season, it normally takes on Porter’s Chapel. But that was not the case on Saturday.
Instead, Trinity Episcopal had its first-ever showdown with St. Aloysius in a battle between private and public schools. And it turned out to be a sweep for the visitors from Natchez.
The Lady Saints had no problem defeating the Lady Flashes 70-38 behind a 22-point performance by Caroline Ketchings, but the Saints had rally from an early deficit to defeat the Flashes 72-60.
The varsity girls’ game turned out to be one-sided in favor of Trinity Episcopal. St. Aloysius tried to stay with the Lady Saints in the first quarter, only to end up trailing 17-8. The second quarter proved to be big for the Lady Saints as they outscored the Lady Flashes 25-11 to take a commanding 42-19 halftime lead.
The third quarter was a disastrous one for St. Aloysius as it scored its only point during that entire eight-minute stretch from the free-throw line. Trinity Episcopal, on the other hand, scored 24 points to take a 46-point lead into the fourth quarter.
With Lady Saints head coach Richy Spears unloading his bench, the Lady Flashes made the outcome more respectable with an 18-4 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Leslie Pomeroy scored 11 points and Madelyn Cross added nine points for the Lady Saints, who improved to 14-9 on the season. The Lady Flashes were led by Tori Hines with 15 points and Carlye Smith with 10 points.
The varsity boys’ game turned out to be a good one matching the Saints, ranked No. 2 in MPSA Class AA, and the Class 1A Flashes.
St. Aloysius took it right at Trinity Episcopal in the first quarter en route to a 19-13 lead. However, that lead would not last very long as the Saints scored 26 points in the second quarter while holding the Flashes to just 12 points to take a 39-31 halftime lead.
Unfortunately for St. Aloysius, it could not put together a big rally in the second half. Even though the Flashes trailed by just seven points going into the fourth quarter, the Saints answered by outscoring them 18-13 in the fourth quarter.
Givonni Dent led Trinity Episcopal (16-4) with 16 points while Kent King had 14 points and Andrew Johnson had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Sean Johnson led St. Aloysius with a game-high 18 points while Ford Biedenhorn and Alex Lanier each had 12 points.

BASTROP, La. — Daniel Guedon scored 21 points and his lay-up with one second left gave the Rebels a dramatic come-from-behind win over the Spartans Saturday night in an MPSA District 3-AA game.
ACCS appeared to be in trouble down by seven points in overtime, but the defense made some big stops to allow the Rebels to finish the game on a 9-0 run. However, the game would not have gone to overtime if their defense had played that well in the fourth quarter.
The Rebels took a 48-40 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Spartans would not go away. Prairie View forced overtime by outscoring ACCS 18-10. But after the Spartans grabbed the momentum to start the extra period, the Rebels took it away.
“Basically our defense came and went during the game. They were able to get a lot of second chance shots. That’s what kept them in the game,” Rebels head coach Rick Fife said. “Our defense stepped up in overtime. We hit a couple of big shots and our defense allowed us to win in the end.”
Guedon set up the game-winning shot with a big steal underneath the Rebels’ own basket. He then took one dribble and laid it in.
“Daniel provided us with the post game and Lee (Swinny) provided us with the inside out game,” Fife said. “Lee had several big threes. James Moffett had two big free throws in the clutch.
Swinny led ACCS (4-8, 1-1) with a game-high 28 points. Chase Anderson had 18 points and Conner Smith added 15 points for Prairie View.

This was a tough loss for Central Private, which was looking to improve to 3-1 in district play. The Rebels fell behind 12-8 at the end of the first quarter and 25-16 at halftime and never could recover. Rick Mears and Lance Wicker led them with 14 points apiece.

BASTROP, La. — Logan Tubbs scored 17 points and Lena Kate Thompson had 15 points to lead four Prairie View players in double figures as the Lady Spartans defeated the Lady Rebels Saturday night in an MPSA District 3-AA game.

Fuller’s 10 points were the same as Prairie View’s fourth-leading scorer in this game, Caroline Oliphant. Terri Ann Lord added 12 points for the Lady Spartans. Ashley Morrison, who has been one of the Lady Rebels’ top scorers this season, was held to just six points.
