NATCHEZ — Like this week’s temperatures, city sales tax revenues are creeping higher.

The city collected $429,489 in April, up from $424,938 in April 200. Sales tax collections are reported two months after the fact.

“We had a lot of activity here in April,” City Clerk Donnie Holloway said. “We also had several conferences at the (Natchez Convention Center).

The 67th annual Key Club Louisiana, Mississippi and West Tennessee District Convention, the 106th annual Knights of Columbus State Council meeting and the 2010 Mississippi Emergency Management Technicians Association Conference were among the events hosted at the Natchez Convention Center in April.

Spring Pilgrimage, which spans March and April, also played a role in the revenue spike, Holloway said.

The city collected $447,563 in March, up from $445,321 in March 2010 — a .5 percent increase.

Sales tax revenues have been on the rise since February, when the city collected $418,097, up from $403,484 in February 2009.

January revenues might have been an indicator for the months to come. Though January revenues dropped compared to the previous year, the drop was the smallest in months.

The city collected $387,016 in January, down from $390,258 in January 2009. The city experienced as much as a 12 percent decrease in monthly sales tax revenues last year.

Holloway said total sales tax revenue for fiscal year 2010, which began Oct. 1, is $3,797,915. Since January 2010, sales tax revenues have increased by 1.7 percent.
