NATCHEZ — In September, Natchez High School senior Guy Wimberly was tapped as a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program — now he’s the school’s Star Student.
Wimberly got that accolade earlier this month.
“It feels great,” he said. “It really is an honor.”
But the honor isn’t one that comes easily.
Wimberly earned the recognition by earning a 32 on his ACT and maintaining a minimum grade average of at least 93 since his sophomore year.
“It takes a lot of hard work,” he said.
Wimberly’s hard work also allowed him to select NHS’s Star Teacher of the year.
And that choice didn’t take him long.
Wimberly, who aspires to teach math, picked his math teacher, Lance Reed.
Reed, who teaches trigonometry and pre-calculus, said students like Wimberly are very rare.
In more than 10 years of teaching, Wimberly is Reed’s first student who hopes to teach math.
“You just don’t see a lot of that,” he said.
While Reed said he felt honored to be named Star Teacher, he was particularly glad the recommendation came from Wimberly.
“He can literally do anything he wants to do,” Reed said. “He’s that sharp, and for him to pick me, it’s just an honor.”
But before Wimbelry can start sharing his gifts, he needs to go to college.
He’s narrowed his choices down to three.
“Right now I’m still trying to decide,” he said. “But I’m looking forward to it, no matter where it is.”
