NATCHEZ — Madeleine Christian might have missed the first couple of times she had a shot at a goal, but she never stopped shooting.
And it was a good thing for the Lady Green Wave as she scored the game-winning goal 15 minutes from time in Cathedral’s 2-1 win.
Christian is on a bit of a scoring tear recently, as she also scored two goals in Cathedral’s win over Franklin County last Tuesday.
Natchez High scored first with a Shelby Guice goal in the first half and the score remained 1-0 at halftime. Anna Elise Rinehart evened the score with a penalty kick goal early in the second half.
Cathedral finally broke out on top for good when Christian rapped the next late in the second half.
Cathedral’s season ended with the victory while Natchez High will advance into the South State playoffs.
However, Cathedral coach David Gaudé said it was nice for his seniors to go out with a win in their finale.
“It was nice to get the win,” he said. “We like playing Natchez High. Usually it’s a good, competitive game and it was today.”
Cathedral 2, Natchez 1, PK shootout.
It took a little extra time, but the Cathedral Green Wave managed to squeak out a victory over Natchez High in a penalty kick shootout.
The game was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, and since it was not a district game, the two teams went straight into a penalty kick shootout.
Natchez misfired on their first three shots while Cathedral’s Julilan Stubbs and Hunter Foster scored on their attempts.
Natchez goalkeeper George Bates kept the shootout alive with a goal, but Cathedral’s Andrew Walker ended the game with a strike into the left corner.
Cathedral coach Rick Simons gave credit to his goalkeeper, Aaron Sandifer, who made two nice penalty saves in the shootout.
“That’s something we work on in practice,” Simons said. “He’s come a long way from the beginning of the season in being able to stop those. He normally steps one or two of those in practice and makes it look easy.”
While Natchez coach Dennis Hogue was disappointed in the loss, he was thrilled with the effort his team gave in its season finale.
“They easily get up for this game more than any other one,” Hogue said. “They were pumped. It was easily the most fun game this year. We had fun, but we came up just a little short.”
The game was played in bitterly cold temperatures and biting wind, which made it difficult for the players on the pitch,” Simons said.”
“It was real hard playing in weather like that considering it was warm at practice (Friday),” Simons said. “Going from warm to cold makes it tough to adjust, but we had to adapt.”
Natchez jumped out on top in the first half when Calvin McKnight rippled the net 22 minutes into the game.
The score remained 1-0 at halftime, but Cathedral tied it up seven minutes into the second half when Natchez’s Michael Thompson accidentally knocked the ball into his own goal off a Cathedral corner kick.
Neither team threatened much after that and the game went into penalty kicks.
That was the final game of the season for Natchez (2-11-1) while Cathedral (12-5) advances to the playoffs to face Richland on the road Tuesday night.
