With July nearing, try to stay cool

If you are a Southerner, you know the drill.
July rolls around and the temperatures climb. Yes, June was hot, but it wasn’t July-hot.
In these parts, we are used to it. Thanks to the joys of air conditioning, many local residents really don’t suffer much at all.
Limit your time outdoors — unless you are in the pool — and the next two months pass without harm.
But not everyone is as lucky as you may be.
Dozens of local residences don’t have air conditioning, making the coming month not only unbearable, but dangerous.
Still others work outside in the heat of the day, providing services those of us who are appropriately cooled will enjoy.
So as the temperature climbs — some forecasts have temperatures at 99 and 100 next week — remember that some people are suffering.
Be sure you know whether all your neighbors, especially the elderly, have an appropriate means of cooling off. Take time to check on those around you, we are, after all, known for our kindness.
Remember pets that may be outside in the sun. Be sure there is appropriate shade and water at all times.
And be nice to those men and women who are cutting grass, directing traffic and working in construction. Tempers flare when the sun starts cooking, and a few kind words may be the best way to chill a hot situation.
Hospitality won’t be difficult, we know; if you are a Southerner, you know the drill.
