local authors receives recognition for his book

Natchez — Natchez resident Jim Barnett’s book “The Natchez Indians: A history to 1735” was recently selected as a Oustanding Academic Title by Choice Magazine.
Appearing in the Januaray issue of Choice Magazine was the list of most significant print and electronics works reviewed by the magazine in the previous year. This year the list included 679 titles in 54 disciplines and subsections.
Titles are choosen based on several criteria including overall excellence in presentations and scholarship, importance relative to other literature in the field and value to undergraduate students.
The magazine said Barnett’s book is “solid, well written volume that is the first scholarly mongrahp in modern times that deals with the history of the Natchez Indians.”
His book is a history of the Natchez Indains and tells how they dealt with a changing world, the political ambitions of France and England and their eventual disappearance as a people.
Barnett lives in Natchez and works as the director of the division of historic properties with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History at the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians.
