BASTROP, La. — In the first half, the Prairie View Academy Lady Spartans played like the No. 4 team in all of Class AA as they dominated Trinity Episcopal on both ends of the court en route to a 14-point halftime lead.
But then the Lady Spartans had to hold off a furious second half rally to defeat the Lady Saints 39-37 Tuesday night and win the District 3-AA championship.
Led by Caroline Oliphant and Lena Kate Thompson, Prairie View (31-4, 7-0) jumped out to a 13-2 lead after one quarter of play and took a 22-8 lead into halftime. But Trinity Episcopal found its offensive rhythm in the second half and nearly pulled off what would have been a huge upset win.
The Lady Saints outscored the Lady Spartans 15-9 in the third quarter to cut that halftime lead in half and then had a 14-8 advantage in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, the Lady Saints ran out of time and the Lady Spartans escaped with the win.
Oliphant led Prairie View with 14 points while Thompson scored nine points. Madelyn Cross led Trinity Episcopal (20-13, 5-2) with 12 points and M.C. Iles had nine points.
