BASTROP, La. — The road to the District 3-AA championship didn’t turn out to be as easy as expected for the second-ranked Trinity Episcopal Saints. At least not in their last three games.
First, there was a 2-point win at home over Chamberlain-Hunt on Jan. 26. Then there was an overtime win at River Oaks last Friday. And then to top that was Tuesday night’s 67-65 win over the Prairie View Academy Spartans.
But those wins did enable Trinity Episcopal to go to 9-0 in district play and clinch another district crown. Tuesday night’s win also probably gave the Saints a first-round bye at next week’s South State Tournament, which will take place at Copiah Academy in Gallman.
But the Saints nearly blew a 10-point lead going into the fourth quarter as the Spartans caught fire in the final eight minutes and scored 21 points. But the Saints scored 13 points, just enough to hold on for the win.
The two teams had a combined seven players score in double figures. Jackson Bryant led Trinity Episcopal (25-7) with 19 points while Andrew Johnson finished with 16 points and Brandon Daggs had 15 points.
Prairie View was led by Connor Smith with a game-high 22 points and Bonner Bordelon with 17 points. Robbie Jones added 12 points and Chase Anderson chipped in with 11 points.
Chamberlain-Hunt 68, ACCS 47
NATCHEZ — David Hahn, Chamberlain-Hunt’s seven-foot-tall center, was a force in the middle Tuesday night as he scored a game-high 27 points in the Cadets’ win over the ACCS Rebels Tuesday night in District 3-AA action.
Neither team could get out to a big lead on the other in the first quarter, which ended with ACCS leading 12-10. By the end of the second quarter, however, Chamberlain-Hunt had the momentum going its way as well as a 25-22 lead.
The third quarter proved to be the difference as the Cadets outscored the Rebels 22-9 for a commanding 47-31 lead. Not only did Hahn have his way on the offensive end, but his height was trouble for Rebels center Joe Barksdale, who was held to just eight points.
With the win, Chamberlain-Hunt moved into a tie for second place in the district standings with River Oaks. Josh McNair chipped in with 10 points for the Cadets. ACCS (5-16, 1-8) was led by Lee Swinny with 13 points and James Moffett with 11 points.
Salem 56, Cathedral 54
TYLERTOWN — Cathedral had a chance to win the game with a three-pointer, but it was not able to take one thanks to Salem not being in the penalty and a turnover as the Wildcats held on to defeat the Green Wave in Region 8-1A action Tuesday night.
Cathedral held the ball with 45 seconds left to try to go for a three-pointer, but with 7.7 seconds left, Salem committed a foul, which was just its fifth of the fourth quarter.
“They called a timeout and we drew up a play. We lost the ball inbounds and they got the ball and ran the clock out,” Cathedral head coach Peter Arnold said. “By far the most complete game we’ve played all year. I wouldn’t be any prouder of them if we won.”
Carl Hammitte led Cathedral (6-18, 4-7) with 22 points. Daniel Huffines and Russell Goodman almost had double-doubles. Huffines had nine points and nine assists while Goodman had nine points and 10 rebounds.
Justin Lewis and D. J. Harness scored 17 points apiece and James Riley had 15 points for Salem, which improved to 6-5 in region play.
Wilkinson County 60, Jefferson County 54
WOODVILLE — Darrius Knox scored 21 points and Kenny Harden had 20 points as the Wilkinson County Wildcats held on to defeat the Jefferson County Tigers Tuesday night in a Region 7-3A game.
Wilkinson County scored 22 points in the second quarter to erase an early deficit and take a 35-29 halftime lead. But the Wildcats went cold in the third quarter and scored just eight points. However, Jefferson County wasn’t able to take advantage of the situation and still trailed by three points at the end of the quarter.
The Wildcats made up for that bad third quarter by outscoring the Tigers 17-14 in the fourth quarter.
Davion Noble led Jefferson County with 17 points and Terry Tenner added 13 points.
Epps 71, Monterey 46
MONTEREY, La. — Even though Epps is No. 12 in the latest Class B power rankings, it played like a top-five team as the Panthers rolled to an easy win over the Monterey Wolves Tuesday night in District 3-B action.
Epps (25-5, 3-0) dominated most of the game from the opening tip. The Panthers jumped out to a 16-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and by halftime had a comfortable 33-15 lead. They then outscored Monterey 22-12 in the third quarter to increase their lead to 28 points.
Jonathan Herrington led Epps with 19 points. Monterey (1-2 in district play) was led by Josh Chapman with 18 points and Ross Lipsey with 12 points.
Lake Providence 40, Ferriday 35
LAKE PROVIDENCE, La. — Ferriday’s opportunity to win the District 2-2A championship took a big blow as the Trojans lost to the Lake Providence Panthers Tuesday night.
Ferriday took a 29-28 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Trojans were unable to maintain their lead as they were outscored by Lake Providence 12-6 in the final eight minutes.
Juan Robinson led Lake Providence with 14 points. Carlton Robinson led Ferriday (8-14, 4-2) with a game-high 17 points.
