NATCHEZ — A handful of Cathedral School football players are set to put their talents on display in Texas this weekend at the National Underclassmen Ultimate 100 camp in Dallas.
The Ultimate 100 is an invitation-only camp that features the top performers from previous underclassmen camps. The players will participate in combine drills, individual competitions and a 7-on-7 showcase.
“It was an honor (to be invited),” Cathedral junior Khalil Brice said. “I didn’t really have a good day (at the qualifying camp), and I wasn’t expecting to go, so I was kind of shocked. It’s going to be fun and a real honor.”
Brice will join teammates Daniel Huffines, MacArthur Doss, Rodney Hall and Ishmael Blackmon in Texas, Cathedral coach Ron Rushing said.
Freshman Christian Jenkins also participated in the Ultimate 100 camp, but he went to Atlanta for his, Rushing said.
Huffines said having so many players invited is a good sign for the Green Wave.
“It just shows the talent we have at Cathedral,” he said. “There are plenty more guys that could definitely be here, we could take the whole team and compete. We have a bunch of talent.”
Doss said having his teammates there will make the experience that much sweeter.
“(Having teammates there) is great because (it’s good) to have a teammate actually be there and understand what you’re going through and know what kind of competition you are going against,” Doss said.
With the camp being invitation only, the players know they are going against the best of the best and they are looking forward to the competition, Doss said.
“(The competition is) going to be great, that’s all I can tell you,” he said. “I’m looking forward to the competition. I’m stoked and about ready to go. I probably won’t be able to sleep (Friday night).”
The players will leave this morning to drive to Duncanville High School just outside of Dallas.
Brice said he is going to enjoy the trip with his teammates before it’s time to perform.
“(Going with my teammates) is the best part. We’re going to have fun on the way up there, and it’s going to be fun until we have to get serious and work,” Brice said.
Rushing said it is great to have so many players get invited to the camp.
The camp also provides an arena for the players to get noticed by college scouts and coaches, Doss said.
“The camp can do a lot to get coaches to recognize me, and see that I may be a good asset to their team at a certain position,” Doss said.
Huffines said the camp also provides a chance for the Green Wave players to prepare for the fall.
“I think it’s great everybody is into football (this summer), and all the camps are just helping us get into the swing of football, so hopefully we will be in rhythm (when the season starts),” he said.
