LORMAN — Alcorn State’s Lee Robinson has been invited to participate in the NFL Scouting Combine, the university announced Tuesday.

Robinson, an outside linebacker for the Braves, is a four-year starter who made the all-Southwestern Athletic Conference team as a senior.

He had 111 tackles (10.5 for loss), 3.5 sacks, three interceptions for 66 yards and a touchdown and three forced fumbles.

Robinson had 223 tackles (33.5) for loss before the start of the 2008 season, and his overview on NFL.com states he could be a potential starter at rush linebacker.

Robinson said in a statement released by Alcorn State that he was “very excited about the NFL Combine,” and added the will “do your best because you never know who’s watching you.”

Robinson was named SWAC Defensive Player of the Week in week four, the Most Valuable Senior Award from the Jackson Touchdown Club and first-team all defense honors this season. He was also an honorable mention for Sports Network All-American.

“When we came in we told Lee that the sky is the limit,” interim head coach Earnest Collins said in the press release. “Coach Zach Shay did an outstanding job as Lee’s position coach.”

An analysis of Robinson by NFLdraftscout.com lists his positives as good height and upper-body strength and nice closing speed and says he is a team leader on and off the field.

Robinson “can bull rush and rip from running back/tight end blocks…fights through trash inside to get to the ball carrier…will hustle down plays.”

The Web site says his downside is the unknown of whether he will be an inside-outside linebacker or play in between, and he does not change direction well laterally. He also needs to improve his open-field tackling.

The 2009 NFL Scouting Combine will be held Feb. 18-24 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind.

Players are invited to the “job fair,” where they go through a series of drills, tests and interviews with NFL personnel, including head coaches, general managers and scouts to decide who wants to draft them and when.
