FERRIDAY — The ACCS Rebels got a solid complete-game performance from Jake Brumfield in a 3-0 win over the Huntington Hounds Thursday afternoon at the Huntington Preseason Baseball Tournament.
Brumfield pitched five shutout innings for ACCS, giving up one hit while striking out five and walking five. He also escaped a couple of bases-loaded jams in the game.
“We had the bases loaded with one out in the first and didn’t manufacture any runs,” Huntington first-year head coach Leo Eliser said. “We had the bases loaded in the fourth and didn’t manufacture any runs. Our hitting’s off.”
ACCS scored two runs in the top of the first inning thanks to a couple of walks, a couple of passed balls and a fielder’s choice. The Rebels then scored one run in the top of the second on a ground ball to first base. However, the Rebels had just two hits in the game.
Caleb Gillespie pitched the first two innings for Huntington and allowed three runs while striking out three and walking two. Jordan Wilson came on in relief of Gillespie and did quite well.
“He struck out five and walked just one,” Eliser said of Wilson. “Both teams started ninth-graders on the mound. We just didn’t have the hits at times.”
Despite the hitting woes, Eliser said he felt like his team played better than it did against Tensas Academy on Wednesday night, when he played several junior varsity players and non-starters to look at different positions.
“Tonight I really felt like we stepped up,” he said. “It’s just a work in progress. I talked with (ACCS head coach) Hunter (McKeivier) after the game and he’s doing the same thing. He’s got some kids in some spots that he’s trying to see. I’ve got some kids in some spots that I’m trying to see.”
McKeivier was pleased with his team’s performance after losing to Franklin Academy 3-2 Wednesday night.
“Compared to last night, it was a total different team effort. We had a letdown and we took care of business,” McKeivier said. “The hitting’s going to come around. It will. We have to be patient at the plate and pick our pitches to hit.
As for Brumfield’s performance on the mound, McKeivier said, “He did a tremendous job. He used his fastball well and used his curveball to his advantage. Defense backed him up.”
ACCS goes up against Tallulah Academy today at 6 p.m. and Huntington will take on Franklin Academy today at 8 p.m.
