MONTEREY, La. — The Monterey Wolves had a better outing Tuesday afternoon at home against the Avoyelles Charter Vikings than they did Monday night on the road against the Vidalia Vikings.

Unfortunately, it came in a loss as Monterey blew a two-run lead in the top of the seventh inning and lost to Avoyelles Charter 8-6 to fall to 0-2 on the season.

“We competed better today. I’m playing with a lot of young kids,” Monterey head coach Eric Richard said. “We were up two runs in the top of the seventh with two outs and two strikes on two kids and we couldn’t close the deal. They made plays down the stretch and we didn’t.”

Monterey scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the first inning before Avoyelles Charter scored four runs in the top of the second to take its first lead of the game. But the Wolves responded with four runs in the bottom of the third and appeared ready to win the game after scoring another run in the bottom of the fifth for a 6-4 lead.

But Avoyelles Charter won the game with a four-run rally in the top of the seventh and winning pitcher Hunter Riche did the rest, holding Monterey scoreless in the bottom of the seventh.

Riche went the distance for the Vikings, allowing just four hits while striking out 12 and walking seven. Frey, an eighth-grader, allowed three hits while striking out eight and walking eight in 5 1/3 innings.

“We had a chance to win the game and we didn’t,” Richard said. “The difference was their pitcher. He must have thrown 120 or 125 pitches. He threw as well in the seventh as he did in the first. They did a good job. But I’m proud of my kids.”

Ross Lipsey led Monterey at the plate by going 2-for-3 with two runs batted in. Canal (no first name given) had a double for Avoyelles Charter.

Monterey next plays at Adams County Christian School on Saturday with the junior varsity game at 11 a.m., followed by the varsity game at 1 p.m.

Trinity Episcopal 9, WCCA 3

WOODVILLE — Trinity Episcopal used a three-run rally in the top of the fourth inning to take the lead for good as the Saints defeated the Rams Tuesday night.

Sophomore pitcher Trevor Faust was the winning pitcher for Trinity Episcopal (1-1) despite a rough outing. He have up six hits, walked three, hit two batters and struck out just two in 4 2/3 innings. Wells Middleton relieved Faust and pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

The Saints took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning before WCCA (0-2) scored two runs in the bottom of the inning. After a scoreless third inning, Trinity Episcopal regained the momentum in the top of the fourth with its big rally and then score a run in the top of the fifth to make it a 5-2 game. The Rams scored their last run in the bottom of the fifth before the Saints put the game away with four runs in the top of the seventh.

Daniel Dunaway, Jake Winston and R.J. Fleming each went 2-for-3 and Givonni Dent had a triple for Trinity Episcopal, which takes on C.H.E.F. at 4 p.m. Friday and Central Private at 6 p.m. Friday at the Central Private Tournament in Baker, La.

Losing pitcher Sutton Olive as well as Hayden Whetstone each had a double. Whetstone went 2-for-3.
