NATCHEZ — Residents can catch the life story of R&B singer and Natchez native Alexander O’Neal Monday night on TV One cable and satellite channel.

O’Neal, 57, will be featured at 9 p.m. on the hour-long series “Unsung” along with artist Cherrelle, with whom he made the 1985 hit “Saturday Love.”

The show’s writer and producer, Henry Schipper, said parts of the show were filmed last year in Natchez, at O’Neal’s home and the football field where he played ball.

O’Neal was ranked in the top 10 R&B artists in the 80s and 90s, Schipper said.

After leaving Natchez at approximately age 20, O’Neal moved to Minneapolis, Minn., where his career picked up, much to the help of producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, whom also worked with Janet Jackson, Schipper said.

“(O’Neal went from Natchez to Minneapolis as a nobody, and hooked up with jam and Lewis, and the rest is history,” Schipper said.

He said O’Neal moved to London for approximately 10 years when his career fizzled in the United States and became very popular there.

“His voice is considered one of great natural interpretive voices of his generation,” Schipper said. “And it’s all from Natchez — the Southern black soul that is indescribable.”

Schipper said O’Neal still performs all over the world, and Monday’s night’s show will include a recent live performance by O’Neal in Las Vegas, as well as interviews from his mother, sister and childhood friends in Natchez.
