FERRIDAY — Despite having just three hits in the game, the Riverfield Academy Raiders took advantage of some fielding miscues to defeat the Huntington Hounds 5-3 in a five-inning game Tuesday afternoon.

“Landon Horne threw an excellent ball game. We made a few errors behind him. We made a few mental mistakes,” Huntington head coach Leo Eliser said. “That’s a AA team we played tonight. They’re a well-coached team.”

Even though Horne was the losing pitcher, he kept Huntington in the game by pitching out of a few jams that Eliser said the defense created.

“Horne threw about 80 pitches. He pitched real well,” Eliser said.

Riverfield took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning before Huntington responded with one run. The next three innings were a pitching duel between Horne and Raiders pitcher Taylor Lance. Then the Raiders scored three in the top of the fifth for a 5-1 lead.

Huntington got two of those runs back on a home run from Jess Dossett, but the rally stalled and Riverfield held on.

“It’s going to come around. Our pitching’s gotten better. Our hitting’s gotten a little better. As a whole, even though we lost, I was pleased with them,” Eliser said.

Huntington (0-2) begins District 6-A play at 6 p.m. Friday, hosting Tallulah Academy.
