ACCS beats Vidalia in pitchers’ duel

VIDALIA — It was a pitchers’ duel in every sense of the word, and just one mistake made all the difference in Adams County Christian’s 2-1 win against Vidalia High Thursday.
With the game still scoreless at the top of the sixth inning, Ryan Comer came up for the Rebels and hit a single that glanced off Vidalia pitcher Mason Ozburn’s glove and was fielded by the shortstop.
Comer reached second on a fielder’s choice play to bring up freshman Jake Brumfield, who, with a 2-0 count, hit a shot over the left field wall for the first runs of the game.
“If Comer wouldn’t have gotten on second, we’d still be playing,” Brumfield said. “On 2-0, you just always swing at a fastball because 2-0 is the best pitch in baseball to hit. So I swung.”
The Vikings answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning, as Seth Thompson hit a double to the centerfield wall and reached third on a fielder’s choice. Matt Souderes then reached first on a throwing error by ACCS shortstop Christopher Perry, sending Thompson home.
But one run wasn’t enough, and the Vikings’ seventh-inning rally attempt quickly fell short with a man left on base.
“We made a mistake on one pitch, and it cost us,” Vidalia coach Johnny Hoffpauir said. “Our inability to put the ball in play cost us. That (Colin) Dollar kid, I’ve seen him in summer league, and he’s a good pitcher with a great curveball.”
The pitchers’ numbers were nearly identical.
Dollar allowed four hits with 13 strikeouts and three walks for the Rebels, while Ozburn struck out 17 with four hits and three walks for the Vikings.
“You knew coming into the game that it was going to be a heck of a battle,” said ACCS coach Hunter McKeivier. “Dollar probably threw the best performance I’ve seen in the two years I’ve been coaching him. He stayed ahead in the counts, threw his pitches when he needed to and made them work for him.”
Vidalia is still a young team with freshman starters and is trying to make its way this season.
The Vikings (2-3) will travel to the Bolton Doubleheader in Alexandria on Saturday.
ACCS will play Brookhaven Academy at 7 p.m. today.
McKeivier said the win against a public school was an important step in keeping momentum going into district play.
“Early in the year we weren’t getting the necessary hits but now we are,” he said. “Overall I couldn’t ask for a better performance from these kids. Every single one of them stepped up at some point in this game.”
