NATCHEZ — Fans of all kinds — from the boisterous and excited to the quiet and sedate — were on hand to watch the Natchez AYA basketball tournament at Adams County Christian School Saturday.
The stands at the tournament, which started at 8 a.m., featured boys’ and girls’ teams from around the city, were filled with proud, nervous parents and grandparents cheering on the players.
One, Katie Boyd, is the grandmother of 12-year-old Kylie Powell, who is No. 9 on the ACCS fifth- and sixth-grade girls team.
Boyd had sat through three games before watching her granddaughter play and said she was excited to see the contest begin.
Baseball and football are Boyd’s favorite sports, but she enjoys watching basketball too.
“It’s just the sport I like,” she said. “I like to see my grandchildren play any sports.”
Boyd said she gets excited during the game and cheers for Kylie, but she never gets too rowdy.
“You want your grandchildren to win, but I really don’t like to scream and holler,” she said. “There’s no need for that.”
But another ACCS fan may disagree.
Missy Spear was at the tournament at 8 a.m., even though her son Devin, 11, didn’t play until noon.
“I’ll be here all day,” Spear said. “I was sitting up top (of the stands), but I had to move down lower so I could get a better view of the game.”
Spear’s husband Ken assisted Dr. Frank Guedon in coaching the fifth- and sixth-grade boys team. Devin’s team won its 11 a.m. game.
“We’re just real AC supporters,” Missy Spear said. “I went to AC for 15 years myself, and Devin’s been going here since he was six weeks old. We help coach — whatever the need is.”
The championship round of the tournament will be Monday at the ACCS gymnasium.
