Mississippi clothing tax holiday still alive

JACKSON (AP) — A proposal to give back-to-school shoppers a tax break is still alive at the Mississippi Capitol.
The Senate passed a bill on Tuesday that will exempt sales tax on clothing during the last weekend in July if the purchase is $100 or more. Similar legislation has been proposed in recent years, but has failed to be approved by lawmakers.
Under the Senate version of the bill, municipalities could choose to opt out of the so-called tax holiday by contacting the state Tax Commission within 90 days of the tax exemption weekend. The House had approved a 30-day window.
