COLUMBUS (AP) — The city of Columbus will remove a camera used to catch motorists running traffic lights.

The city council voted Tuesday to remove the camera in anticipation of Gov. Haley Barbour signing a bill passed by lawmakers to ban their use. Barbour has to decide what to with the bill by Monday.

If he signs it, the ban would take effect immediately.

How fast the cameras will come down depends on the city’s contract with Redflex, which leases the cameras to the city, says City Attorney Jeff Turnage.

City Chief Financial Officer Mike Bernsen says motorists caught running the red-light located in a central Columbus neighborhood have paid more than $53,000 in traffic tickets.
