NATCHEZ — The little leaguers of the T.M. Jennings league got the opportunity to see some new faces across the diamond Tuesday night when two teams from Fayette came to Natchez to play games against T.M. Jennings’ players from the 9- and 10-year old and 11- and 12-year-old leagues.

League director Eric Fry said T.M. Jennings Little League took a select group of players from the 9s and 10s to play a 9- and 10-year-old team from Fayette at 6 p.m. Game 1 was followed by a second game featuring a team comprised of 11s and 12s from T.M. Jennings facing Fayette’s 11s and 12s, Fry said.

T.M. Jennings made the most of its games against the two new opponents. The 9s and 10s won their game 11-3, and the 11s and 12s won 8-2. Deselle Davis, coach of the 11s and 12s, said his team played well together.

“They played together, and they played well,” Davis said. “They didn’t make any errors, and that’s what I expected out of them, (because) they practiced hard (all week),”

Davis said his guys prepared hard to face their new opponent.

“They were very excited, it was something different for them. They practiced all week, and all they could think about was the other team,” he said.

Travez Lyles got the win for the 11s and 12s, and Jakarius Caston was the winning pitcher for the 9s and 10s.

Each T.M. Jennings league only has two teams, and the teams are forced to play each other every game of the season. Having the teams from Fayette come play gave the players an opportunity to compete against a different opponent, Fry said.

“We just wanted to broaden (the competition) out, and do something different,” Fry said. “We wanted to add a little flavor to (the games).”

Thomas Dunbar and Osmon Perkins coached the T.M. Jennings 9- and 10-year old team, and Dunbar said the new competition was good for the players.

“It’s a good thing for (the players), because they are constantly seeing each other,” Dunbar said. “This will give them a new experience.”

Hubert Gaines, one of the coaches for Fayette, said games like this help his league, as well.

“We have a small league, and playing different folks builds the league up,” Gaines said. “We come down (to play), and get exposure too.”

Fry and Gaines both share the problem of not having enough players in their leagues to field many teams, Fry said. They were introduced and decided they would arrange games between each other to give the players more competition.

Fry said his goal is to continue to play out-of-town teams. He is working on scheduling games with teams from Port Gibson and Vicksburg, he said.

Fry said that playing games against teams from outside of Natchez helps the program grow and that is his main goal.

T.M. Jennings will have a tee ball team facing a team from Port Gibson at 6 p.m. Friday at the Frazier Primary School Fields.
