Census blow strikes again, oh well

Well, that’s depressing.

The only area in the Miss-Lou that we thought had actually gained in population in the last 10 years didn’t. Like the rest of us, Concordia Parish lost people too.

The news came Monday night — five months after the Census numbers — when a redistricting expert pointed out to Concordia Parish Police Jurors that the 2010 Census numbers included 1,181 inmates, up 800 inmates from the last Census and making the overall parish population number misleading.

In actuality, there are 606 less residents in the parish than there were in 2000, bringing the population to 19,641 in 2010 down from 20,247 in 2000.

Welcome to the club, Concordia. Natchez, Adams County, Vidalia and Ferriday welcome you.

Now that we are all here, only one option exists — get over it.

With that pity party done, and everyone in the same boat, the Miss-Lou must only work together to make the next Census better than the last.

The announcement that Elevance Renewable Sciences wants to locate in Adams County and hire 165 people is a great start.

What else can we do in the 9 years left before the 2020 Census? Plenty if we work together, get over the past and check our egos in 2010.

Not so depressing after all, is it?
