ALEXANDRIA, La. — After a shaky first inning by Brandy Bordelon, Heather McGuffee relieved her and pitched three strong innings as Harrisonburg rallied to defeat Cathedral 7-6 Friday afternoon at the Grace Christian Tournament.
Harrisonburg was without Katie Johnson, the Lady Bulldogs’ ace pitcher, who was preparing to participate in today’s Girls All-Star Game in Pineville, La.
And in the top of the first inning, it looked like they were a different team without her on the mound.
Bordelon walked six batters and hit three others as Cathedral jumped out to a 5-0 lead. But the Lady Green Wave could not keep the momentum going thanks in large to McGuffee’s pitching and Harrisonburg’s bats.
Harrisonburg (8-1) got back in the game quickly with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Cathedral scored one run off McGuffee in the top of the second, but she kept the Lady Green Wave off the scoreboard in the final two innings. Their only hit was a single by Mollie Devening.
The Lady Bulldogs scored four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 7-6 lead, and that would wind up being the final score.
Cathedral fared even worse in its second game as it was shut by Choudrant 6-0 Friday night.
Choudrant’s Julie Smith had a lot to do with that as she struck out 10 batters and gave up just two hits.
Cathedral (2-10) got singles from Betsy Daggett and Beth Fortenbery.
