FERRIDAY — Huntington’s bats and its defense let the Hounds down as they lost to the Tensas Academy Chiefs 8-5 Friday night in an MPSA District 6-A game.

Huntington had just two hits in the game and committed four costly errors. Even though the Hounds scored five runs, they could not take advantage of several walks issued by Tensas Academy.

“Mentally, we’re just not there. We’re not hitting the ball when we needed to hit the ball,” Huntington head coach Leo Eliser said. “They walked a lot, but we left too many men on base.”

The Chiefs scored all of their runs in two innings. They got things going with five runs in the top of the first inning and scored three more in the top of the fourth. The Hounds scored one run in the bottom of the first, but they didn’t score again until the bottom of the fourth and by the time that inning was over, they were trailing 8-2.

“Jordan Wilson came in and shut them down from the fourth inning on,” Eliser said. Wilson relieved Jess Dossett, who was saddled with the loss.

Huntington (1-5, 1-3) scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth and one run in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough.

Jena 8, Block 7

JENA, La. — Block scored a run in each of the first three innings, but Jena rallied for six runs in the bottom of the third inning and held on to defeat the Lady Bears Friday night at the Jena Tournament.

This was the second straight loss for Block after an 8-2 start to the season. The Bears were coming off a tough 5-1 loss at St. Mary’s of Natchitoches, La. to start District 3-1A action Thursday night.

It looked like the Bears were on their way to getting back to their winning ways after jumping out to their 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning. But host Jena had other ideas as the Giants took advantage of some walks and timely hitting to take the lead.

Both teams scored one run in the fourth inning and Jena scored a much-needed run in the bottom of the sixth inning for an 8-4 lead. Block scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to make it an 8-7 game, but Jena was able to get the third out to end the game.

Winning pitcher Deandre Wallace went 2-for-3 and Will Alexander was 2-for-4 to lead the Giants. Curdarius Johnson was 3-for-4 with a double and John Davis had a double for Block (8-4).

The Bears will take on Bolton today at 1 p.m. as action in the Jena Tournament continues. Bolton rolled to a 16-5 win over Monterey Friday afternoon to drop the Wolves to 3-10 overall.

WOODVILLE — Just 48 hours after a huge District 6-A win at Huntington, the WCCA Rams surprisingly lost a varsity doubleheader to CHEF in a pair of five-inning games Friday night.

In the first game, Seth Barnett held WCCA to just three hits. Two of those were by Sutton Olive, and one of those hits was a double. The Rams scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning.

CHEF had 10 hits in the game and took advantage of five WCCA errors. CHEF took command by scoring nine runs in the top of the second inning and then added one run each in the top of the fourth and the top of the fifth. Barnett helped his own cause by going 2-for-3 with a triple and Richard Hopkins was 2-for-4 with a double.

While CHEF continued to keep its offense going in the second game, its defense nearly let it down with five errors. WCCA scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 5-1 lead, but CHEF put together three straight three-run innings and held on for the win.

Olive had a triple and Randy Bell went 3-for-4 for the Rams, who fell to 5-9 overall. Jonathan Monk had a triple and Brandon Smith was 2-for-4 with a double to lead CHEF at the plate.
