Wave cruise to another win

NATCHEZ — Another district game, another easy win for Cathedral. And this time, they hardly had to lift the bats off their shoulders.
The Green Wave scored 11 runs in the first inning thanks to seven walks and an error en route to a 17-4 win over Bogue Chitto.
In fact, Bogue Chitto starting pitcher Cole Laird walked the first three batters of the game on 12 consecutive balls.
He walked six of the first eight batters before being relieved.
“They gave us most of those runs in the first inning,” Cathedral coach Craig Beesley said. “Some of us hit the ball well, but there were more walks than hits.”
In addition to the seven walks, the Green Wave (11-0, 7-0) had four hits in the inning, with all of the hits going for extra bases.
Tyler Ballard, Preston Edwards and Caleb Johnson all had triples while Hunter Foster hit a double in the inning.
Cathedral added five more runs in the second inning before emptying the bench and scoring just one run over their final two innings.
The large margin of victory did allow Beesley to give a lot of pitchers work.
Edwards, Ballard, Aaron White and Cole Mann each pitched at least an inning in the game.
While Cathedral keeps winning games by large margins, Beesley is concerned about the lack of competition his team has played so far.
The Green Wave were supposed to face stiffer competition in the Vidalia Catfish Classic and then play North Pike over spring break, but all of those games were rained out.
“We lost a lot of games over spring break,” Beesley said. “The main thing I’m worried about is the pitchers not going deep into games. We get these big leads early in the game and our pitchers aren’t able to go deep.”
However, Cathedral’s schedule will get tougher following another game against Bogue Chitto on Friday.
The Wave take on rival St. Aloysius Saturday at Chester Willis Field before facing tough district opponent West Lincoln twice next week.
“Saturday and next week we’ll get some good competition.” Beesley said. “We’re looking forward to it.”
