Trial for vehicular homicide given more time

VIDALIA — Attorneys for a man accused of vehicular homicide in a four-car pileup that claimed two lives asked for more time to file pre-trial motions Wednesday.
Cedric A. Hunter, 25, 6 Newman Drive, Natchez, was scheduled to appear in the Seventh Judicial District Court Division B courtroom for a trial of motions, but the trial of motions did not happen because of the request.
The defense also wanted more time to interview expert witnesses such as crash reconstruction experts, First Assistant District Attorney Ann Siddall said.
The case has been set for a status hearing May 13.
A trial of motions is a pre-trial step in which defense and prosecuting attorneys argue the parameters of how the trial should be conducted. In some cases, the trial of motions may include arguments about what evidence should be included in a trial.
On May 18, 2008, Vidalia police responded to a 4:01 a.m. call about an accident on the eastbound U.S. 84 bridge.
When they arrived, they discovered four vehicles — a gray Dodge pickup, a green Chrysler four-door sedan, a silver Dodge four-door and a black Ford Crown Victoria — wrecked at the scene.
One victim, Terrence Johnson, 20, died at the scene of the accident, and a second — 22-year-old Kelvin Keys — died the following day at University Medical Center in Jackson.
The two victims were in the same vehicle, police said at the time.
The four vehicles had just left a Vidalia nightclub and were involved in an illegal race when the accident happened, police said.
Hunter was initially arrested on a DWI charge following the incident, and was released on a $696 bond.
He later turned himself back in to police when they filed vehicular homicide charges against him in late June, and was released on a $200,000 bond July 4.
Others involved in the accident reportedly fled the scene.
