Danny’s meeting with city postponed

VIDALIA — The meeting between the Vidalia Board of Aldermen and the owners of Danny’s Lounge didn’t happen Thursday night.
That’s because the owners asked the city to postpone the meeting, Mayor Hyram Copeland said.
When they called Thursday morning, the owners didn’t give a reason why they wanted to reschedule the meeting. Instead they only asked for a later date, City Attorney Jack McLemore said.
“They asked for us to postpone it until 6 p.m. April 7,” McLemore said.
The meeting for Thursday with the full board of aldermen was scheduled as a follow-up to a closed meeting with aldermen Triand “Tron” McCoy and Vernon Stevens, Police Chief Ronnie G. “Tapper” Hendricks, Copeland and McLemore.
At that meeting, Danny’s co-owner Sandra White outlined a plan of action to those present about how the owners would beef up security at the nightclub.
The lounge has been a point of contention between the city and the owners since June.
Safety officials have accused the club of being a magnet for noise, drugs and violent crime.
The owners have responded that their club has been unfairly branded, and that incidents that police linked to the club did not even happen on their property.
City officials and the owners talked of having a meeting when the issue first came up, but that meeting never happened.
Those on both sides of the issue have said the others refused to work with them to have a meeting.
Then, in December the aldermen voted not to renew the bar’s liquor license, effectively shutting it down, though it could have continued to operate as a restaurant.
After dozens of supporters of the club showed up at the aldermen meeting in January, the board voted to set up the current round of meetings.
Danny’s owners could not be reached for comment Thursday night.
