Natchez — Students from Alcorn State University will present a recital at 7 p.m. on Monday at Trinity Episcopal Church.

David Troutman, instrumental instructor, said Natchez is fortunate to hear the choirs and singers from Alcorn State perform several times a year but, until now, instrumental students have not had the same opportunity.

Under the direction of Larry Konecky, chairman of the department of fine arts, Alcorn State has enticed a number of excellent players from Mississippi and around the world to pursue their music studies in Mississippi.

And on Monday, Natchez will have the opportunity to hear some of them.

Monday’s recital will feature pianists Naomi Isumi from Brazil and Matthew Pettigrew, saxophonists, Melton Harvey and Johnny Johnson, tubist Byron Chatman and violinist Vera and Anton Zholandz from Russia.

Troutman said it has been a privilege to work with the Zholandzs.

“There training in Russia was superb,” he said. “But I have had the opportunity to work with them on repertoire that they did not know, especially from the Baroque period. Their technique is faultless, and I hope that I have been able to expand their horizons.”

The highlight of the recital will be a performance of Bach’s “Concertor for Two Violins” which will be performed by the Zholandzs. They will be accompanied on piano by Bernardo Scarambone, professor of piano at Alcorn State.

“This is a major work,” Troutman said. “They are performing it beautifully.”
